The Hoch's Monday Shmonday - Week 9

I give up. I really do. This season is crazy and there is nothing that any of us can do about it. The good are great, the bad are terrible and the middle is completely mediocre. There are some bright spots, but not a lot. Especially in the Pacific Northwest (see: Shaun Alexander)

I want to also say to all of you Fantasy Nerds out there (myself included) that I hope your teams are doing okay…since all of mine are terrible. Stupid injuries and bad offensive lines.

Upset of the weekend:

Minnesota 35, San Diego 17 I believe that this might be the second time that I have placed MIN in the “Upset” category based on Adrian Peterson. The rookie rumbled for a record-breaking 296 yards on the ground.

This is significant for a few reasons.

•1)     This kid is good.

•2)     The record was held by Jamal Lewis from the 2003 season where he came within 39 yards of Eric Dickerson's now 23 year old record.

•3)     Peterson is projected to hit 2072 yards on the season, which is second best all time for any RUNNINGBACK. This will destroy the previous record for a rookie, set by Dickerson of 1,808 yards.

•4)     Dickerson ran 1, 808 his first season (1983) and broke the single season record with 2,105 his second season (1984).

•5)     This can mean one of several things, but hopefully that in the next few years we will see a very good young back break several records.

And what is Reggie Bush doing right now?

In the “not-so-much-an-upset-as-it-is-surprising” category:

Detroit 44, Denver 7

Denver, where hath you gone? Things aren’t looking too good for the Orange (does anything rhyme with orange?)…guys.

Cutler went down, Henry may be facing a long suspension, the Offense can’t keep the ball in their hands and the Defense is terrible.

We're not a good football team right now, said cornerback Dre' Bly, who played in Detroit the previous four seasons. We've got to look in the mirror and see if we're doing our jobs.

Green Bay 33, Kansas City 22

Green Bay can’t be stopped. They can’t run, but they can’t be stopped…that’s right…add that one up.

Washington 23, NY Jets 20

2 words: Clinton Portis. Guy ran for 196 yards. Is he back?

New England 24, Indianapolis 20

I was calling for the Colts. They should have won, but they got lazy. The Pats came through in the 4 th quarter, and as a very popular cliché says: “The game is four quarters.”

You all know how I feel about the Pats. But I do have to say that they beat a VERY good team. Barely. Will the Colts win when they meet again? I don’t know. But they will hopefully have their weapons back.

As Tom Jackson put it on ESPN last night (this is paraphrased): There are no moral victories in the NFL, but the Colts have to look at this loss and say that they lost while missing a couple big pieces. They have to feel comfortable that when they get these guys back, they may be able to squeak one out.

I still don’t believe the Pats will go 16-0 or 19-0, but they are as good as they have shown.

Kudos to Joseph Addai

Dallas 38, Philadelphia 17

Philly looked like a sick puppy. They have some massive work to do if they are going to dig their way out of last place in the East.

And my biggest disappointment of the weekend:

Cleveland 33, Seattle 30 OT

I just want to point out that the Packers are 7-1 and they have arguably the WORST rushing offense in the league. They get it done by throwing. Mike McCarthy is telling the NFL that they are going to throw and the defenses need to stop them if they can.

Why can't the Seahawks do this? Because of Mike Holmgren.

Stop right there. I am NOT calling for Holmgren’s head. I am simply stating that he is holding the team back at times. We have a QB that is REALLY good and there are some great receivers on this team. They are at least better then what GB is bringing on the field.

Everyone is saying that if the Seahawks couldn’t run on the Browns they couldn’t run on anyone. Then, it is time to start passing, Mike. Throw it. Throw it deep. Bench Shaun and bring in Morris, who has shown that he can catch a pass, and even did alright in the running game (9 carries for 55 yards). I stated before that we didn’t have a better option…but we obviously do.

I also said that I can no longer pick the Seahawks to win. They have let me down. I think that I can give myself 3 more times this season that they are a lock to win (which they were yesterday) and that is STL, AZ and ATL. Other than that…I will still be rooting for you, my team.

Bright Spots? Nate Burleson, Darryl Tapp (INT) and Bobby Engram.

Holmgren looks like he misses Ron Wolf. A lot.
