After the success of the last article I wrote featuring a Q & A with him (co-beat writer Afraidofedhochuli), we've decided to make this into a series, I'll ask him questions, he'll ask me questions back. Read it and weep.
1. I am a firm believer that Jordan Babineaux is the worst person on the field as far as man to man coverage, what are your thoughts on the Cowboy killer?
I think that it is tough to judge him since he is:
a) A nickelback and
b) He is not a very visible player.
I have always liked Jordan, but he is a converted safety. Safeties (as a rule) are better in zone then man and maybe that has come in to play. Also, he is a bit slower then most corners.
I don't think Jordan will ever be a starting corner, but I admit that the guy himself is a very solid #3.
2. Six Seahawks made the Pro Bowl. Who deserved it? Who did not deserve it?
I will break each one down. (* = Starter)
Matt Hasselbeck, QB
Matt definitely deserves it. He isn't starting, but he is going. And why not? He is having the best year of his career.
Walter Jones, T *
Is he having the best year he could? No. Is he living up to his name? No. But no one really pays attention to the Offensive Line and he is a big name. He has dropped off, but I feel that until he allows 8 sacks, he is a pro-bowler. And since he WILL be in the Hall of Fame there is no harm in selecting him to the Pro-Bowl.
Patrick Kerney. DE *
Ummm…yes, he deserves it. He has been worth every penny. He leads the league with 13.5 sacks…
Julian Peterson, OLB *
Dude has 9 sacks…4 Forced fumbles and 2 Interceptions. He only has 68 tackles, but he has 9 sacks…NINE. Yes.
Lofa Tatupu, MLB *
101 Tackles, 1 Sack, 3 Forced Fumbles, 4 Interceptions and 9 passes Deflected. Is that enough? Well, let me put it this way, in the top 40 for tackles he is one of 2 players with 4 picks (Gary Brackett). I think that deserves it.
Marcus Trufant, CB *
Yes, Yes, Yes. A Thousand times yes. 7 Interceptions is pretty awesome (2 nd in the league, first in the NFC).
Nate Burleson (Reserve Returner)
He is only a reserve, but I think that he should go. He has 2 return TDs, he leads the league in Punt Return Yardage and is 4 th in Punt Return Average. SI.com ranked him 5 th in the league and Devin Hester said he loves to watch Nate return kicks.
Bobby Engram got snubbed. 7 th in the NFC in yardage, 3 rd in receptions and has been the #1 (for all intents and purposes) receiver for the Hawks.
3. I'm mega baffled on why 3rd and 1 to Mike Holmgren is like discovering fire and not knowing what to do. If you were calling the plays, what would you do in these situations?
I would pull a play from the Madden playbook. 4 wide with a RB in the back field (Preferably Morris). Run it on a 3 count and try to get them to jump offsides and then run it between the center and guard. Hopefully the 4 receivers spread out the D and the back can get passed the one LB in the box.
That sounds goofy, but it is all about the chess match, right?
If you don't like that, then you line it up and hand it to the full back.
4. Suppose the Seahawks make it to the NFC Divisional Round, which team would you rather lose by a bunch face, Dallas or Green Bay?
Who has more weapons? The Cowboys. They fear me more.
I think that Ryan Grant has shown that he can run, but the Seahawks Defense has shown that they can stop the run and I have a feeling that the Veteran Coaching of Holmgren could win the game in a return to Green Bay. Favre is scary, but as we have all seen, when he is flustered he just throws it up. Enter Patrick Kerney and Julian Peterson.
5. The Seahawks will likely face either the Giants or the Vikings, can this revamped defense stop their explosive running backs in Brandon Jacobs, Chester Taylor and Adrian Peterson respectively?
I would be afraid of the Vikings. Hope we get the Giants. All they have is Jacobs. Burress is injured, Shockey is broken and Eli has not grown. Jacobs is not something to worry about.
Taylor and Peterson have an amazing line in front of them that will rough up the D-Line.
Wish for the Giants and their inability to play in Qwest.
6. Have the special teams problems been solved by getting rid of Boone Stutz?
I think that #3 has gotten through his problems and #1 was having trouble with Stutz. The long-snapping looked like it might be fixed, but the special teams is a different issue. We will have a really difficult time this weekend watching a guy like Yamon Figurs return. This weekend will be the answer to your question.
7. Finally, do you think Leonard Weaver should be involved in more running plays?
I appreciate the question, but I think that it is tougher then just yes or no.
He is the fullback now and in the Mike Holmgren offense the fullback is a blocker primarily, a pass-catcher next and last a running back. I love watching him catch the ball and make plays, but if he is going to be the Hawks' FB of the future, it is time to let him be that.
Do they need to adjust their offense to make him more of a part? Maybe. This goes back to the 3 rd and 1 question. He could be the short yardage back. We would all love to see it.
We need to remember that Weaver was almost cut during the off-season, though. He has had some growing pains. He is electric, though and the fans get behind him. But ask yourself this: What will bring the fans on more: Weaver or a Championship?
Thanks for the questions; I will start putting some together for you next week!
Unless Matt is interested in breaking down Kyle Boller's ineptitude, no Seahawks/Ravens preview this week. Heck, no sense in doing it until playoff time. Thanks to Matt for responding to these questions, and now go freely chew us out for interviewing each other.
