The Greatest Sports Day of Your Life

With the return of Jon Lester yesterday, I couldn't help but feel amazing. I tried to remember the last time I felt as good as I did last night, and then I remembered.

October 23, 2004. The greatest sports day of my life.

I was in Chicago with my mom to go to the BC-Notre Dame football game in South Bend. We got up, and it was pouring rain outside. We drove the 90ish minutes to Indiana and got in our seats, the rain drizzling. The game was ridiculous; back and forth it went, and it got too much for me with BC down 23-17 with 2:51 left in the game, driving the field with a 3rd and long. I proceeded to go to the bathroom, and on my way back to my seat, standing still in the concourse, I saw Tony Gonzalez, the BC wideout, diving in the end zone. He caught it. Touchdown Boston College. I saw all the BC fans going nuts, tears streaming down my mom's face. BC hung on-ND missed a field goal as time expired. 24-23. A great day as it was.

Made even better by the Red Sox in the World Series, Game 1 was scheduled to start in a few hours. 80% of the BC people were also sporting Red Sox hats. We left Notre Dame stadium chanting, "who's your daddy?" (BC had beaten ND 4 out of the last 5 times they met). We finally got in the car, turned on ESPN radio to listen to the start of Game 1. Just before getting back to Chicago, Papi hit a 3-run shot off Woody Williams. Things were looking fabulous.

We got back to the hotel, I changed into my Orlando Cabrera t-shirt, and we went to dinner. We had to wait, so we sat at the bar and I received scoring updates from the bartender. I put my phone away to refrain from checking the score constantly. By the time we got back to the hotel, it was 9-9 in the 8th. God damn it, I thought. It was all going so well.

I put my pajamas on, brushed me teeth and put head down on the pillow to watch the rest of the game. Not 2 minutes later, Mark Bellhorn shtoinks one off of Pesky's pole. Amazing. Red Sox win, 11-9.

The greatest sports day of my life. What's yours?

January 1st 2007. I went to the Rose Parade in Pasadena and then I was in attendance when USC thumped Michigan in the Rose Bowl. After the game we celebrated by throwing around the pigskin in addition to having some hamburgers. I then went home and watched the Boise State Miracle. Best sports day ever!

Super Bowl XXXVIII is my personal favorite. It was my first Super Bowl as a football fan (I was 12 at the time) and my favorite team won as time expired. Michigan-Ohio State would have trumped it had Michigan won, but alas they did not.

Agreed. SB 38 and the '04 World Series. I hate to be a regular Boston fan, but when the Red Sox won the World Series, even though I haven't been a Sox fan for that long (been one since July '04), I felt so many chills going up and down my spine because all my family would talk about was winning the World Series one day. It is so ironic that when I became one, they were on a hot streak. I loved every single player on that team. Personally, because I live overseas and I can't watch many football, basketball, or baseball games on ESPN like the US, that was my favorite moment. Sorry guys, for being a lil' obvious..

Just after 9/11, at Fenway Park they played "I Love New York" during the 7th inning stretch. To hear THAT song, in THAT ballpark after what had just happened brought a tear to my eye.

Another one was February 15, 1998 when Dale Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500. It was his first win in the race after 19 attempts, some of which were really heartbreaking. Getting passed on the last lap, having a tire go down with 2 laps to go, etc. But finally he broke the curse and won.

July, 2001: Five months after his father died at Daytona, Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the Pepsi 400 at the track. It was one of the few tiems in sports history that EVERYBODY was at least somewhat happy with who won.

September 12, 1998...Joe Paterno's 300th win...the stadium, regardless of the score was even more electric than usual...

Watching the Phillies in the '93 series in my grandparents attic, the only place w/ a tv...sweating my ass off

Pretty much every Eagles NFC Championship (and one SB), regardless of the outcome...those days were awesome...just the excitement

There's a lot...

A close second place goes to January 10th, 2003, my 17th birthday. I recorded a personal best in my high school track meet, then went to the Pats-Titans playoff game with my brother. We froze our asses off (the coldest game in Patriots history), but the Pats won 17-14.
