The Fast Fifteen: Guarantees That Never Came True

20

by SSreporters

Anthony Smith is by far the worst person in the world in the minds of Steelers fans with an epic "We're going to beat the Pats" guarantee. Looking back at "history", I've found some very interesting promises that were not to be.

15. Matt Hasselbeck at the Packers/Seahawks game: "We want the ball and we're going to score" (True)

14. For the 8th year in a row, myth expert Donny Johnson promised that the Madden curse is going to end.

13. Tom Brady has promised his wife that he is a strong supporter of safe sex.

12. Bob Ryan of the Boston Globe incorrectly guaranteed that Bill Belichick would smile after every game they win this season.

11. John Madden guaranteed that he would give his fair share of knob-slobbering to every QB to the league not named Favre or Brady or Manning.

10. SSReporters guaranteed that he would stop writing badly about ESPN.

9. Soccer player David Beckham: "I will score goals that are not penalties or free kicks"

8. This has been 14 weeks in a row in which Dolphins players are confident that they are going to win.

7. Charlie Weis promised that they would indeed make a BCS game with a 3 win record.

6. Joe Buck promised to be very excited during the NFL season.

5. The Florida Marlins management guaranteed that they would have record attendances.

4. ESPN promised to devote more coverage towards west coast professional teams.

3. Your current cable provider guaranteed the NFL Network would be free.

2. Before tip off, Isiah Thomas boldly stated that the Knicks would indeed keep his job.....oh wait....

1. Philadelphia continues to guarantee that they will win the Super Bowl, the NBA Finals, the Stanley Cup, and the World Series.

Sound off in the comments.

Raw even Billichick said it wasn't a guarantee. He said both teams are confident they will win the game.

"We're going to win...Yeah, I can guarantee a win." So what is that? An insinuation?

"If he would have quoted me right, he would have understood what I said," Smith said. "I said we come out and do what we're supposed to, we're going to win the game. We didn't do that." that is what Smith said regarding the rest of the interview which you conveniently left out of your quote. Most people that ACTUALLY read the interview, including the coach of the Patriots, understand what he said was not a guarantee. You and several members of the media, heard "I can guarantee a win" and ran with it, dropping the rest of the quote.

I read the whole quote. I understood what he was saying, but he was still guaranteeing victory. If he wants to avoid being misunderstood, next time don't actually use the word "guarantee." And also, don't talk trash during pre-game warmups, yelling at Brady while he stretches. That was just silly.

If you understood what he was saying then you would know that it wasn't a guarantee. Guarantees don't come with qualifiers. He only said "Guarantee" because he was basically asked by the interviewer if that word could be used.

He said it was a guarantee, and it back fired, and now they can't afford to lose to the Jaguars or the Ravens or the Rams because Cleveland is right down their neck. If Cleveland win out, and the Steelers lose 2 out of 3, then the division is Cleveland's.

I think we can all agree that it was stupid for him to use the word "guarantee" when talking to the media.

Agreed Raw. I got a minus for asking people to use the context of an entire statement instead of focusing on one word. something smells like a bitter Seahawks fan to me.

Hasselbeck's should be No. 1, in my opinion. I wish I could see, in order, the coin toss, the interception, and Hasselbeck's subsequent reaction every day for the rest of my life.

"Anthony Smith is by far the worst person in the world in the minds of Steelers fans" False, False, False. He's an up and coming star. He made a mistake and it backfired, so what, we are over it.

He's already a star in New England. But worst person in the world in the minds of Steelers fans? I doubt that. That's got to be someone on the Ravens. And I'd be more upset at Mike Tomlin. With 7:00 left in the game, down by 3 TDs, he just gave up. They ran up the middle, took the play clock down to 5 seconds each play, it was sad to watch. And the play calling on the goal line was bizarre. Way too clever.

Tomlin gives his coordinators too much control, but that is his style. I'm guessing that if the two teams meet again Coach T will step in and make some calls himself.

It wasn't just the play calling, it was the everything the Steelers offense did in the 4th quarter. It was like they wanted to hold onto the ball because they were more concerned with not getting blown out than they were with maybe making it a game again.

I can understand that view Raw. But keep in mind, both Tomlin and Ariens are rookies. I would expect them to make a mistake more than I would expect them to worry about their egos. But that is just my opinion.
