The End of Maurice Clarett

August 9th - Columbus, Ohio During the overnight hours, two Columbus police officers spotted an SUV making an illegal U-Turn. While a modest offense to be sure, the two officers hit their sirens and pursued the vehicle with the intention of ticketing the driver. At that point, the SUV sped up and began trying to outrun the cruiser. At this point, the cruiser called for backup and assumed an all-out pursuit.
Within minutes, another cruiser and a police helicopter had joined the fray. Down the road, officers threw tire spikes across the road and flattened two of the SUV's tires. After suffering the flats, the SUV pulled off the highway and into a Tee-Jays restaurant parking lot. The officers swarmed the vehicle, taser guns in hand, and ordered the perp to the ground. When he ignored their requests and tried to run, the officers used their taser guns and were surprised to find that they had no effect on the perp. So, they maced him.
The taser guns were ineffective beacause the perp, one Maurice Clarett was wearing a bullet-proof jacket! The mace, however, took him down. After reading the former Ohio State University running back his rights, officers searched his vehicle. Inside, along with a half-empty bottle of Grey Goose vodka, they found four loaded weapons - three hand guns and an assault rifle.
Clarett was arrested and charged with evading officers, resisting arrest, and possession of a concealed weapon (a felony charge). This morning, Clarett finds himself in the Franklin County Jail. Ironically, he has a court date scheduled on Monday, August 14, stemming from an aggrivated burglary charge he faces from last New Year's Eve, when he stole a cell phone (at gun point) from a young man behind a Columbus bar.
Clarett's lawyers are pushing for a change of venue for the hearing on the first incident, claimimg he will never get a fair trial in Franklin County. The have admitted this morning that after this latest incident, they have their hands full.
The decsent from hero to public menace for Clarett has been swift and absolute. More so than for any athlete I can remember (except for O.J. Simpson, of course, who was a better running back and a better criminal). And with these two charges, Maurice finds himself staring extensive jail time square in the eye. And, in the opinion of this Buckeye fan and Columbus resident, I hope he gets it. This guy is a dangerous menace to society and belongs in jail. And I, for one, no longer want him walking the streets of my city.
