The End?

Is this it? Mike Mussina has been blitzed, again, this time by the Tigers. It left me pondering his legacy, and the unfair judgments still dogging him in his waning playing days...

There are questions about Mike Mussina’s toughness…

Mike Mussina was roughed up something awful during an ugly brawl early in his Baltimore career, which, incidentally, almost bought an untimely end to Cal Ripken’s streak, when the latter got clipped below the knee amid the squalor. It was one for the history books, something out of "Gangs of New York". After that, Mussina, whose season ended as a result, if my memory serves me correctly, counted himself out of the retaliation business. Sounds logical.

(On a random note, my God, how ‘bout his 1992 season, pitching in THAT ballpark, when it truly played like a bandbox… amazing, and interesting to consider, how badly were his statistics damaged pitching in Camden Yards, and later on, relying on decidedly shaky infield defenses? Well, in fairness…Greg Maddux had his best seasons with Jeff Blauser manning shortstop…but that’s the greatest pitcher ever.)

His postseason performance…

If this is final chapter for Mussina, he has absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. People questioning his big game ability are simply ignorant. He had one of the best post season runs EVER in 1997, beating Randy Johnson twice in the ALDS*, before completely dominating the loaded Indians in the ALCS. The O’s had themselves were undone by Armando Benitez and a lackluster offensive performance in that Series. Mussina was sublime. In 2004, he would have defeated Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez, in games one and five, if it weren’t for Tom Gordon being totally shot.

His place in Baseball history…

Mike Mussina is one of the best pitchers of this generation, period. Goes to prove, intellectuals are feared and loathed, in any circle.

  • "We weren’t counting on Cy Young showing up for them." – Alex Rodriguez on Mike Mussina in the ’97 playoffs.

Where have I been?

I’ve been working on a screenplay all summer, and am in the process of refining it. Should be completely finished in a couple weeks’ time, and than, like Michael Jordan, I’ll simply send out a press release to the legions of my adoring fans warning:

"I’m back."

OK. Maybe not legions, but all five of you better get ready…

Dude, what's with the bold? And yes, this is the end, for the New York Yankees hopes of winning the AL East.

"Just wondering if the Apostrophe King is co-writer of this screenplay." No, that's not correct but it's a valid criticism if you thought that there's too many 's in this because I took me about four second's to write. The script's pretty good, I'm not saying it's great, but I wrote it all by myself and I think that's something pretty worthwhile even if it doesn't lead to sucess, thank's for taking the time for commenting Tyrone Brigg's.

Wow, what happened to Cy Young, Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Don Drysdale, Warren Spahn, Steve Carlton and the like? I mean, I think Maddux is solid, but even as a Cub fan, I would not put him at the top of the list.

Maddux was the best when it came to consistancy. Plus, he did it without throwing 99mph or having the best of really any pitch in his arsenal. He simply did what we tell our young pitchers to do; keep the ball down and hit your spots.

Mussina is toast...time to give Tyler Clippard another chance. No way Mussina will win 300 games if he can't win with an offensive force like the Yankees.

"Did you just call greg maddux the greatest pitcher ever?" Yeah man, check the stats, for the era he was pitching in. Thanks for reading and commenting, all.

Clemens' ERA was just as good, and he played most of his career in the AL (with the DH). Randy Johnson's ERA+ is also a bit better than Maddux's. Pedro's is off the charts, but that's because he was so dominant in his prime and hasn't gone through much of a decline phase yet. From this era, I'd go 1.Clemens, 2.Pedro, 3.Maddux, 4.Johnson, 5.Glavine, but that's mostly because I value dominance a little higher than longevity...I'd have no problem if you wanted to switch Pedro and Maddux.

Keep in mind, in terms of style; I prefer control to pure stuff. Maddux, in his prime, was like an artist. Pure stuff has merit, of course, and Maddux's two seamer to lefties IS one of the nastiest pitches ever, but I'd always rather watch the dude with pinpoint control, compared with 98 MPH cheese. Just a matter of opinion. Oh, and Kwitt, Pedro is a very valid "peak" guy to mention.

I certainly appreciate that you love watching Maddux...but you can't say that he was better than Clemens because you liked his style better. You can argue that what Maddux did was more impressive, because of how he did it...but you can't say he was better when the stats say otherwise.

You guys ought to go to papaleaders.com and check out a formula called PAPA-Park Adjusted Pitching average-it takes into account everything a pitcher has done to determine value-and Maddux is no.1 all-time for peak value-and no.2 all-time (behind Walter Johnson)in career value (Clemens 3rd in CV).
