The ESPN Ombudsman Speaks Sense

Le Anne Schreiber, the ESPN ombudsman, may now be their best columnist as well.  In this article, she writes eloquently about "Who's Now" and the decline of Sportscenter as an effective sports-news organ.  Hopefully, her suggestions will be taken into account.

Its like the phantom they hide in the closet...she's not the most interesting writer (a little dry for my tastes, personally) but she's talented and more importantly, speaks the truth! Its refreshing that ESPN has someone like this, even if it is kinda forced...

I like reading the ombudsman pieces, because they usually echo what most of us feel and admits what no one else on that network will. I think she was spot-on with her "who's Now" article, and it amazes how out-of-tune the producers are sometimes.

For the record, I think the idea she proposed of a news-heavy 30-minute SportsCenter every evening would be a great idea. The network can still do its pointless fluff, but we still get the things that made SportsCenter great in the first place.

Until then, I'll be sure to catch Outside the Lines every day.

I really hope they take that idea about the 30 minute SC as well. I mostly watch ESPN News right now. The big network just isn't worth it most of the time.

I understand her point, but she's basically just proposing for ESPNews to be shown on ESPN and called Sportscenter. I agree with everything else about the article, but why have a 30-minute Sportscenter when you already have ESPNews? That said, I must admit I haven't watched Sportscenter in a long, long time.

Why? Because not every cable system carries ESPNews, while nearly every cable system carries ESPN. I have the expanded basic package on my cable and I don't get ESPNews.

ESPNews is great ... except for the Breaking News ticker that sometimes tells you something you found out over 8 hours ago. :P

It will go in one ear and out the other at Bristol. Only ways things will really change at ESPN if there is some competition.

Sadly, I think that's what it's going to take. But who'll step up. FSN is a dud in most markets and CNN/SI folded a while ago.

It would take unity among some local networks...

I know in Canada, there are like 3 national sports networks.

I have a hard time believing anything can seriously challenge ESPN anytime in the near future... the more likely scenario would be people just not watching as much simply because they can access their news more online. But I have a hard time believing anyone will be able to threaten ESPN's relative monopoly.
