The Devine One

Thursday September 13, 2007 marked the true beginning of something special in college football. A kid on West Virginia picked apart the Maryland defense just like he did in high school. We all know about Steve Slaton, but Noel Devine is something to watch out for. He has drawn comparisons to Reggie Bush since he stepped onto the field in high school, but some would call that an understatement. Devine looked more like Barry Sanders in high school; flashing a combination of quickness and strength. You can watch his highlights on Youtube, but make sure you keep your hand on your chin to avoid dropping your jaw so far that it dislocates. Thursday night Devine averaged 27.6 yards on 5 carries. He didn't have one huge run, he had a lot of big runs, breaking tackles, juking players out of their shoes, and even running through a blatant facemasking penalty. Sure the kid comes with a past that you could only see in a movie; the orphan child with a child of his own who is struggling to maintain grades, that almost gets adopted by Deion Sanders and barely makes it to college, but he made it. Soon he will be the name on the tip of everybody's tongue in the college football world. Now if only he wasn't running behind one of the best running backs in the country.
