The Cowboys Bank On Tank

Tank Johnson and his agent have reached a two-year agreement with the Dallas Cowboys just 10 minutes prior to a deadline the Cowboys had set. Johnson will immediately begin serving his 8 game suspension and will be available sometime during midseason. The Cowboys have been in need of a nose tackle ever since Jason Ferguson went down with a season ending biceps injury in Dallas' opening day win over the New York Giants.

The Chicago Bears waived Tank Johnson on June 25, three days after he was pulled over by police in Arizona. Prior to his run in with the police in Arizona Johnson had served a 2 month prison sentence after a raid on his home found enough weapons to arm a small militia. Johnson had previously told reporters on May 18 that he would become the NFL's Man of the Year.

Two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties on Owens Sunday, one for taunting and one for celebration. One of those penalties helped Miami score a touchdown that made the game a lot closer than it should have been. And still, NOBODY chastised Owens for having no self-control. Yeah, his laid back style is working wonders, and only two games into the season. Color me totally unimpressed.

The main reason why Johnson was signed is just what Brendan said...after Ferguson went down for the year, they NEED someone to man the middle. While Johnson is no Jamal Williams, he is serviceable and will help Dallas once his suspension ends.

Great pickup. He'll add great depth to the line and if he causes problems we really don't need him anyway. Last time we went after a controversial player, it worked out pretty well.

I think his talent is a good pickup, but this is not the kind of mess ANY team should want to inherit. The guy is serving an eight-game suspension for MULTIPLE run-ins with the law. That's just a bad investment. I'd rather see them get run all over because they have nobody up the middle than see them bring in a thug like this.

Great point, and you have to imagine Parcells never would have signed a guy like this. But in the current environment, I don't think the Cowboys have to worry about Johnson getting into trouble again. If he makes one misstep, the commissioner will solve the problem for them.

I think the commissioner solving the problem IS what the Cowboys should worry about. They have to realize this isn't a think like Michael Irvin or Larry Allen where they can say, "innocent until proven guilty," and kind of sweep it under the rug. This is a team that was finally starting to fix its image, and then they got Owens, Hamlin and Tank. Holy crap, what a mess they're building for themselves.
