The Boston Celtics: The Next Team To Be As Disappointing As The 03-04 Lakers

by Filthy McNasty

Besides ruining all three of their stars' fantasy value, Boston's acquisition of Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen is sure to break a lot of hearts in Boston. As soon as the trigger was pulled on the KG deal, Donnie Wahlberg was on First Take declaring a certain championship. When this team loses in the first or second round of the playoffs with no future hope in sight, we'll all be declaring the entire Boston fan base deceased. When are people going to learn that throwing a bunch of desperate to win, aging superstars on the same team never works? It didn't for Malone, Payton, and the Lakers, and it didn't for Barkley and the Rockets. Sure, in the Eastern conference it may work in the regular season, but come the post season, these guys will get torn to shreds at the point guard position, which coincidentally is once again the most important position in the NBA. Who are they going to start? Rajon Rondo? Chauncey Billups and Jason Kidd will give these guys fits, and with Chicago and Cleveland continuing to improve, the Celtics will have trouble getting that Conference Championship they've already been anointed. Pierce, Allen, and KG's personalities may mix well, but with a supporting cast of Brian Scalabrine and Kendrick Perkins, they won't be getting sized for rings any time soon.

I am a die hard Lakers fan and I thought of these very examples when I heard about the proposed KG trade. When will people learn that this method simply doesn't work?

Do you know anything about Rajon Rondo? He can shoot a lick, but he is a very good defensive point guard. He will be giving other good point guards fits on defense. Also don't forget about Tony Allen coming back from injury. He is also a very good defensive two guard.

i don't like the deal for several reasons, but it's not really like those other deals as Malone and Payton where in their mid to late 30's when they came to the lakers and so where The Dream, Barkley and Clyde. At least these guys are in their early 30's so they still have at least one or two years of top level play in them unlike those other guys who had none.

And those Lakers beat a Timberwolves team with KG and two other "stars" in the conference finals... Difference is, Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell knew how to win... Nighty nite Celtics fans... Go back to dreaming!

Sprewell is a "star" in the same sense that Ray Allen and Paul Pierce are? I think you are dreaming.

I was referencing KG's inability to win as part of a triumnervate. How about Ray Allen with the Big Three in Milwaukee (Jesus Shuttlesworth, Big Dog and Cassell). Paul Pierce and Antoine Walker were really good together... pfft!

Hey, I don't like Latrell, but he had some game (even if he is second all-time in Player Losses). Sprewell was a 4 time all-star, Pierce a five time...

All of them have had seasons scoring over 24/game while Sprewell carried an 8 seed to an NBA finals in '99, has been to TWO conference finals whereas Allen and Pierce have been to one each (with more help) and haven't won jack shit.

Cassell may be ugly, but he is a winning basketball player. Since Allen and KG have had their best seasons with him, maybe the C's should get Cassell to play point guard?

The 03-04 Lakers made it to the NBA Finals.... I think the Celtics would take that in a heart beat over the lottery seasons they have been having. Besides that Lakers team had Malone, Shaq, Kobe, and GP, all players who had tasted the Finals before. This Celtics squad with KG, Allen, and Pierce would give their careers for that opportunity.

The only team to make this work was the Heat two years ago, and they did it with Dwayne Wade
