The Big Unit will fill one of the Diamondbacks gaping holes

Vote

The Arizona Diamondbacks and New York Yankees made the deal that sends the five-time Cy Young award winner back to the Grand Canyon state, official today. This is Johnson's return flight from his two year sabatical in New York, the first trip was when RJ was traded to the Big Apple for Javier Vasquez, Brad Halsey, a catching prospect and cash.

Johnson was 34-19 with a 4.37 ERA in his two seasons in New York.

Randy Johnson and $2,000,000 are coming to Arizona for RHPs Luis Vizcaino 4-6 with a 3.58 ERA, Ross Ohlendorf 10-8 with a 3.29 ERA in AA, Steven Jackson 8-11 with a 2.65 ERA in AA and SS Alberto Gonzalez who batted .290 (140-for-480) with six home runs and 50 RBI in AA.

Johnson had his contract extended to include 2008 as a reward for waiving his no-trade clause. His new contract will pay him $4,000,000 in 2007 and $10,000,000 in 2008, he also got a $12,000,000 signing bonus.

And now I get to gloat since I predicted the basics of the deal, two young pitchers a postition player and the Yanks picking up some contract, in my artical (ok the Vizcaino thing threw me for a loop)

IF the gaping hole you are referring to is for an over-the-hill with very little left in the tank starting pitcher who is injury prone, then I agree. If you are referring to any other gaping hole, I think, sir, you are dead wrong.

Sasha, I agree, Randy Johnson and Brandon Webb will be a great #1/#2 punch.

Actually the gaping hole she is referring to is one made by termites in the side of the stadium. It just happened to be seven feet high and a foot-and-a-half wide so he'll fill it perfectly when he's not on the mound for a few innings every few months...

He won't get 6-7 runs a game with Arizona, that much is for sure. He needs 20 wins for 300, coming off back surgery, and hasn't thrown a ball since the season ended. I'll make a guess if he wants #300 he'll need to add a third year to his contract.

The D-Backs will be better offensivly this year and I'm sure he can get at least ten winns a year for the next two years.

Especially when you consider that the lineups he will be facing (NL, especially NL West) are considerably worse than what he had to face day-in, day-out in the AL East.

This trade sounds terrible, they gave up towo good pitching prospects and all they got back was $2 mil? How does Cashman keep taking advantage of other GMs around the league?

The thing you need to remember is that none of the players in the deal besides Vizcaino have played mor then 4 games above AA. There is a chance that none of those players will ever make the biggs.

If one of the d-backs 'gaping holes' is to have a surly pitcher give up tons of HRs and take swings at camaramen, then the unit should be able to suitably fit that.

The unit never felt comfortable in the big apple. As long as he stays healthy he should thrive back here in the desert where he belongs.

Where did the Dbacks offense improve? They are going to have serious trouble scoring runs this year.

The offense really comes down to how the young guys perform. I can see Connor Jackson and Stephen Drew both having breakout years.

Breakout from what? One's been in the league a year and a half, the other less than a year. Drew, Jackson, Young, Quentin and possibly Montero, two rookies, and three others with less than two full years experience in the ML as your everyday lineup? Good luck.

You just wait until the Snakes have a rookie of the year and MVP in that group. ; )

The two guys I like on the list are Young and Montero. I can see Young as ROY this year, and he better be because he's pretty much here for one season. Jackson and Quentin to a lesser extent but from what I saw last year they are pieces of the foundation, not the cornerstones. And Drew is about as overrated as they come, part in name, part by Boras blowing smoke up our asses, but in reality he's not that good.

From the scouting reports I've heard of Drew he is J.D. with a better average but less power and hopefully much less injury prone. Young was absolutely stolen from the White Sox. Montero might be great but I think he will be just a little above average. The one guy I'm not crazy about is Quentin, I would much rather have Hairston take his place.

Personally, I think the Dbacks need to make a deal or two this year in order to be competetive. The NL West is baseball's worst division and the Dbacks did little to improve themselves, while everyone else did. My thing with Drew is this..he's only 5'10" and about a buck sixty. Thats not very big for a second baseman, much less a shortstop. For him to have a long career he has to change positions, probably to third. He has a great swing, a little too long maybe, but projects more as a #2 or #6 hitter than #3 or #5. Hairston can't play, otherwise he would be. I think he's out of options anyway, so he's gone unless he makes the team as a back-up OF.
