The Better Football Conference: PAC-10 or SEC?

15
Vote

by RDS1980

Another college football season approaches and the debate rages on… who has the better conference SEC or PAC 10. I analyzed the numbers in certain categories for over the past 5 years. These categories are; coaching, NFL Drafts, Top 25 offenses and defenses, championships, and Heisman Trophy winners. I’ll show you what I found and my own estimation of who has the toughest conference.

Coaches: These are the men that call the shots and run the show from the sidelines. Every fall they become the face of their respective schools. If you measure a conference by how successful their coaches are then consider the following. The SEC has 4 coaches in their conference that have won the BCS National Title in their career (Phillip Fulmer, Urban Meyer, Nick Saban, and Steve Spurrier). The Pac 10 only has one (Pete Carroll). Now understandably you have to have the money to go after big name coaches and the SEC pours money in their football programs like manna from heaven, the PAC 10 on the other hand doesn’t necessarily have the funds (USC being the exception) to go after the big coaches.

NFL Draft: Maybe you would like to think that you can judge a conference by how many of their players make it to the big show. Presumably the cream of the crop is taken in the first round, so going back to the 2002 NFL draft to the most recent NFL draft how many players from each conference have been taken in the first round? If that being the case consider this, the PAC 10 has had 19 players taken in the first round in the past 5 years, the last #1 pick from a PAC 10 school was Carson Palmer in ’03. The SEC trumps that with a total of 37 players taken from their conference in the past 5 years in the first round of the NFL Draft, with 2 #1 picks (Eli Manning and JaMarcus Russell). Now I didn’t dwell farther than the first round, maybe the PAC 10 had more players overall go the NFL or maybe the SEC held on to their lead after the first round, however the case still remains if the best are chosen first then the numbers don’t lie.

Heisman Trophy Winner: This is the greatest individual award given in college football, and in the past 5 years no conference has turned out more Heiman recipients than the PAC 10. Since 2002 three players from the PAC 10 have won the Heisman. What about the SEC, well not so much as matter a fact not any. The last SEC player to win the Heisman was in 1996( Danny Weurffell, Florida). These numbers don’t lie either, the PAC 10 has more award winners, and especially for the greatest individual college football given, than the SEC… bar none.

The SEC doesn’t play Offense: I have heard this argument before that the SEC has such a great defense because nobody in the conference knows how to play offense. There could be some truth to this rumor. In the past 5 years an SEC team has only had a top 25 offense 4 times. Compare that to the PAC 10 having a team in the top 25 total offense category 5 times. And more teams are in that category for the PAC 10 than the SEC. on average if an SEC team did have just one team with a top 25 offense the PAC 10 had at least 3. What’s that old saying, “Offense gets the glory!”

The PAC 10 doesn’t play Defense: “But Defense wins the game!” the other side of the equation is not so pretty for the PAC 10. In the last 5 years the PAC 10 conference has only had teams represent them in the top 25 Defense category only 4 times. The SEC has had teams in there 5 times. With far more teams from the SEC being in this category then PAC 10, on average the SEC outranked the PAC 10 four to one on this one.

Who has the most hardware: So which conference has the most championships? That’s what it’s all about right? You sweat it out for 12 games, or 11 in some cases, living and dying with every down just so you can play that precious crystal ball. Well if that be the case then guess who has won more championships…. no one. This is a dead draw. The SEC has won two national titles (LSU <2003 BCS>and Florida) while the PAC 10 has won 2 national titles (USC<2003 AP, 2004 BCS >). If that was going to be your deciding factor then I’m sorry but your stuck, like many millions of college football fan wondering the same thing, who has the better conference?

My Pick: Call it bias in its finest, I pick the SEC. I’m a grad of LSU and I was there for their 2003 BCS title game. Besides that look at the all of the facts, if you take USC out of the equation the PAC 10 doesn’t have a leg to stand on. If you take one SEC team out of the equation then another will take its place. In my research I also found that other conferences are more deserving of being matched up in “Who has the better conference?” debate. Schools like Texas, Michigan, Ohio State, and Oklahoma continuously popped up in every category listed above. So the Big 10 and Big 12 could interject their names into the equation easily.

Having said that, do I think USC walks backwards into the national championship game every year? No, I don’t think so. Look at their non-conference schedule, which the BCS does. They play Auburn, Notre Dame, and Nebraska. I believe in most cases they earn their respect but this wasn’t a debate about the better school… just the better conference.

I appreciate the analysis, but it's not even close. The SEC is in a class by itself in college football.

Neither. The best football conference, at least this year, will be the Big 10.

Christof - If you're serious, go see a doctor for that head injury you recently recieved.

If we are talking conferences, the SEC is better than any other two conferences, if we are talking "the best of each conference", it's still the SEC but by a narrower margin.

Top to bottom, year after year, it's the SEC. Hands down. There is NOTHING else going on in the South during college football season for a good reason. That's ALL there is. The Big Ten (while definitely top to bottom better than the PAC 10) has quality rivalries, but let's be honest... it's not as important to the locals as SEC football... The 3 worst SEC teams could beat middle of the road+ teams of other conferences. I don't even like college football that much and I can see that obviousness...

At least we all agree that the Big 12 sucks...

I am serious. YEs, the SEC was the best conference in America last year. Two years ago, it was the Big 12. This year, it is going to be the Big 10. They have three teams that are loaded to make a run for the BCS Title - Michigan, Penn St., Wisconsin. I don't not disagree that the SEC draws in the fans, but, on the field, this is the Big 10 year.

Last years Ohio State team was considered to be the best team the Big 10 has sent to the BCS in 10 years. It was leaps and bounds better in every statistical category than the championship 2002 team. And when it played the SEC champion (which by the way, was perhaps the 5 best champion the league has fielded in the past 10 years) the buckeyes lost by 25+ points. They were outclasses atheletically, from a gameplan perspective and Tressel was made to look like a fool by Meyer who ran the same little screen pass to Percy Harvin 20 times from different positions. Ask Troy Smith how good the SEC is. It cost him 5+ million dollars.

Alright, maybe I (or you) am confusing "Conference" with "Best the Conference has to offer"... MORE clarification, please... And I'm not talking "last year", I'm talking EVERY year.

Bowl games are not the best indicator of how good a team is. For example, teams are talking about 6 weeks off. That is a lot of time between games. Momentum can be lost. Coaching plays a big role in which teams win bowl games.

I agree, Christof!

Personally, I think you can judge a conference best by it's WORST teams. THAT is what makes a conference tough - TOP to BOTTOM.

But if there was a (Whoever makes Toilets) Toilet Bowl that pitted the WORST teams of each conference, the SEC wins.

I love Ohio State more than you can imagination, but I also am a sports fan and realist. The SEC is leaps and bounds ahead of not only the big ten but everyone in college football. The athletes in the south are more abundant and academic standards are lower. If the Big Ten fielded their best team of players from every school in the conferenc it would be about even against Florida, LSU, Alabama, Auburn, and Georgia playing their normal Squads. It is sad but true.

I think it's easy to determine based on quality professionals they produce. The Pac 10 is no where near the SEC but I noticed the arguments that included the Big 10. The Big 10 is the best. Bar None!

Manny,

I'd feel very confident in MSU, Vandy, or Kentucky Miss against Indiana, Northwestern and Illinois. In fact, I'd wager heavily on those outcomes.

Arguing the strength of a conference by the strength of its weakest teams is foolish. Its on par with a "WE SUCK LESS!" chant. By your logic, a conference that has 10-12 teams in it all with records of 6-5 or 7-4 is stronger than a conference with a team that's 12-0 (playing for the national title), two teams that are 10-2 (playing on New Years day in Generic Florida Bowl A and B.....or maybe, just maybe having an at large berth in the BCS), a couple 8 win teams, two 6 win teams and the rest sub .500 teams. Isn't it clear that the conference with the most teams contending is much stronger?

Ryno, a conference that has a bunch of 7-5 teams is tougher BECAUSE THEY ALL BEAT EACH other... A conference with a few teams with a good record and a couple teams with bad records is weaker because the good teams BEAT UP THE BAD TEAMS...

Your "logic" fails the logic test...

Or was Boise St your choice for National Champion last year? Rooting for Hawaii this year?

First of all, I must admit that I am a LSU fan. As part of the SEC, we consider our conference to be the best because a SEC team generally has the toughest road to get to the championship level games than any other team from another conference. We anually have at least 4 or more (usually more)high calibur football teams a year. With a few exceptions (Like Auburn a few years back), it is very unlikly that any SEC team will finish the season with no conference losses. However, you have some conferences (like the Big 10 or PAC 10 so far this year)that have several teams with one or no losses- but who do they play? The win-loss column greatly dictates a teams poll position. Let's face it, Hawaii may have a great team this year- but who do they play? Yet they are ranked 16th, I think. Many non-S.E.C. conference teams may win a few tough challenges a season, but can they survive unscathed a minimum (usually more) of 4 good (AND usually the rest compentent ) teams each and every season? Yeah, I know...you think your non SEC conference always has 4 or more good teams. But I can guarantee you that if you put your 1 up to 4 best teams into the SEC, none would have a no loss (and very unlikey 1 loss) season year after year.

I think Ohio proved it last year. Like USC this year and a couple of other teams, the media was all goo-goo over them. Is it because of the bigger markets- may be so. Can you blame the lay-off between last game of a season and a bowl game (kinda lame if both teams experience it), I guess so. All we claim is that if you play enough SEC teams, you will eventually lose. If a SEC team goes through the SEC gauntlet with out any loses (Auburn a few years back could be the exception), we consider that a down year for our conference as a whole. Does the SEC always have/has the best team or teams- no, not always. Do we always have 'The' best conference? No. But over the last 20 to 25 years, do we have the best conference? We think so. As a direct indicator- look at Arkansas. The Razorbacks were generally one if not "The Big Gun" for the defunked South West Conference in which @ the time the media said was one of the top conferences. Since joining the SEC, they have had some successes. But no where near the level of success they enjoyed with their former conference. South Carolina is another good example.

In closing, I'll say that we can agree to disagree.

The Big 10 sucks balls and Ohio State will get blasted by LSU and Michigan will get trounced by Florida. Look at the best team in the big 10 Ohio State and look at who could beat them. In the Sec LSU and possibly Florida again would beat them in the PAC 10 USC would kill them in the Big 12 Oklahoma would own them. The only reason USC has so many Rose bowls is because usually they play a Big 10 team. When they had to play a big 12 team they lost to Vince Young and the Longhorns the year before that Michigan couldnt stop Texas either. The SEC is by far the best conference followed by the Big 12 the Pac 10 and finally the ball sucking big 10. The Big 10 sucks Ohio State and Michigan suck Northern schools suck and the South produces the best football talent. GO LSU!
