The Baby Bulls are all grown up

One could say that the Chicago Bulls came into these playoffs with a chip on their shoulder. With the acquisition of Ben Wallace, PJ Brown and two solid rookies in the draft, there would be no room for excuses for first-round elimination. So it was no surprise that the pressure was definitely on after the Bulls lost 109-96 to the NJ Nets in the final game of the regular season. That loss eliminated any chance of what would have been considered an easy pass to the second round courtesy of the depleted Washington Wizards. Instead, they got the short end of the stick. The Miami Heat. The defending World Champions.

Or so it seemed.

The Miami Heat ended up getting the worst possible match-up that they could have asked for. The Heat started Eddie Jones, James Posey and Jason Kapono at small forward. Neither of them had an answer for the standout performer of this series, Luol Deng. No Heat player had an answer for Ben Gordon coming off screen rolls. Any basketball fan had to be amazed even by the patience and consistency that Kirk Hinrich and Chris Duhon show at the point guard position. I'd think any team would love to have a hard-nosed player like Nocioni who can guard three positions, hit from anywhere on the floor and play hard-nosed defense. Add the veteran starting frontcourt and two budding rookies and you have the most dangerous team in these playoffs right now.

How can I go this far in the article without giving all the credit in the world to Scott Skiles? This team clearly fits the mold of their head coach. Their hustle and mental toughness clearly reminded me of how Skiles used to play in his days. Most importantly, this team plays the game the way it is supposed to be played.

Not that the Miami Heat weren't responsible for this shocking development themselves. It is quite hard to excuse thirty-two missed free throws in Game 3 and Game 4. It was almost drink-inducing watching them at the foul line these past two games. Wade was not 100% and had many turnovers due to him not being able to be aggressive due to his injuries. He had to settle for his jumpshot a lot of times as he wasn't able to go to the rim with reckless abandon. The first-round exit might end up being a plus for Wade as he'll have more time to treat his shoulder for next season. Adding further insult to injury was the worst free throw shooter statisically (41.7%) in Ben Wallace hitting 7-8 from the free throw line even when he was intentionally fouled.

Now that's drink inducing for a Heat fan.

The Bulls finally have the proverbial first-round monkey off their back. Now the entire Eastern Conference and even the NBA has been put on notice. The Bulls have knocked that baby label off them for good.

Detroit better watch their backs.

Pistons in 6

Chicago did a great job, but let's remember they faced a very old, Miami team that featured two guys that were not in good shape all season in Shaq and Wade.

I am not that impressed to be honest with you.

They've impressed me and by the end of these playoffs, win or lose, they'll impress everybody. This team won't go quietly against any team. They have mental toughness. Toughness that a certain team from Dallas is lacking at this moment.

I'm extremely impressed. Deng just jumped in status up to one of the top tiers. Gordon is exactly what people thought they would get from Gordon. If you were to have told be before the series that D-Wade and Shaq would both put up 20+ points each game, I would have said that would be it for the baby bulls.

Agreed FP, anyone who has watched the BUlls over the last 3-4 years knew that this day was coming. They showed climpses of it last year when they pushed the Heat to 6. The young kids on the Bulls are not playoff experienced vets dispite only being about 25 yrs old. Deng made one of the biggest jumps in talent that anyone has seen in recent memory. Add in Big Ben who can give them some presence in the middle and the Bulls are a force to be reckoned with in the East face it.

exacty. The east is moving towards regaining superiority. They have two young teams in the Cavs and Bulls that are both ready to take any of the Elite teams in the West to 6 or 7 games, if not win the series. The heat were old. but the Bulls were unstoppable. The Bulls are pretty dang experienced for such a young team, which only can mean that they will be back next year in the playoffs competing for it all again. Keep in mind that if they didn't lose that last game, they would have been the 2 seed in the East. They really weren't a true 5 seed. I thought the Heat would beat the Bulls team I thought they would see. The Bulls proved me wrong, and showed up playing much better than I could have ever imagined.

You couldn't just say that the Heat suck, eh? No team from the East takes any Western Conf. team 6 or 7 games... Big difference between you hoping it's possible and reality, my friend...

I'll say it, then: The Heat suck. Tons of people believed they could just flip on a switch and suddenly be good because it's the Playoffs... There is no switch. They sucked all season, and it shouldn't have been a surprise that they'd suck against Chicago, the Class of the East (for whatever that's worth). Don't be surprised if CHI topples Detroit as well.

you over estimate the West's superiority. The Mavs won the West last year, and the supposedly inferior Eastern Conference Champs, the Miami Heat, beat them in 6. The Series will go 6-7 games, guaranteed

The Heat's win last season was a mix of Dallas chokery, luck, and D-Wade brilliance. Like lightning in a bottle, it'll never be recaptured.

this type of thing happens in every sport. In the NFL, the NFC East was supposed to be the Cream of the crop in the NFC. The NFC North was expected by some to have the first division champion with a losing record. Last time I checked, the bears won 13 games, and made the super bowl. In baseball, the AL was supposed to be superior. Guess what? The Cardinals play in the NL, and they're the defending champs. Just because the Bulls play in the East doesn't mean they won't send the Western conference champs to a game 6 or 7. You don't think the Bulls could win 2 games in the House that MJ built? I sure think they could.

'06 Cardinals were a fluke, too. Other sports are irrelevant anyway -- in the NBA, the best team usually wins in the long run. I didn't say the "team with the best record", by the way -- Golden State is proving that much -- but the best team. And the best team this year is either the Suns or the Spurs. Chicago and Detroit are probably the only East teams that have a shot, but that's pushing it.

The Bulls beating a bad Heat team is very similar to the Suns beating a bad LA team rgiht now.

While the West is still the better conference, The East has gotten gradually better over the past few years. Chicago is gonna be around for a long time. They have that hustle that you see from college basketball teams in the NCAA Tournament. Also, they prove that going to college and learning the fundamentals is essential. They are fundamentally sound. 5 total turnovers in Game 4. They are a force.

Can't we just call it like it is and stop the premature emissions over the Bulls already. The Heat weren't very good coming into the playoffs.

And you could make an All-Star team out of all 8 Eastern Conference playoff teams, it still ain't gonna beat the West winner (cough, cough SUNS).

Get over staring at Today's headlines and painting a Finals picture with a first round headline. The Finals are still more than a month away. Grow some perspective, people...

I'll take the Pistons, Bulls, or Cavs over the Suns in 7. I'd take the Mavs, Spurs, or Nuggets in the West over the Suns. They beat a vastly overrated Lakers team. Your telling me that a team with LeBron, Wade , Deng , Gordon, and Sheed as a starting 5 wouldn't beat the Suns? I don't know how it wouldn't. 80+ points from starters minimum.

Im a Bulls fan and I make no attempt to hide that. That being said, I think the Bulls are a very good team, and easily a top 3 team in the East. I also think they can make a legit run at the NBA Finals. Detroit is still the team to beat in the East. I felt that all season. The Heat never gelled and were never in a position to make a realistic run at defending their title. As far as the West goes, the only teams I stare at and think are true contenders are Phoenix and San Antonio and maybe GS just because of the f'ed up matchups they create can put a thron into anyones side for a game or 2.

Personally, I think the Heat are getting screwed. Usually at this time of year teams don't get more than two or three days off, the Heat don't play again until November.
