Words cannot describe how happy I am right now with the Giants. Left for dead by the media and the fans, after a 0-2 start with an embarrassingly bad defense, the Giants have taken all the criticism and used that to fuel a 5 game winning streak. Yesterday, the Giants played their best game of the year, offensively and so did Eli Manning.
The last time I wrote, I talked about how you could pretty much guarantee a play action pass deep middle to Burress at least once per game. If you watched the game you saw that, that pass did not happen. The Niners did not bring a safety up into the box, to help out on the Giants’ running game, so what does Eli do? He uses the short pass to the running backs, to Shockey and to Toomer. How often did he use the short pass during the game? Eli passed 31 times during the game, all but two of them were described as short passes. The two passes were thrown at Toomer. Old Eli would force balls into coverage letting the defense dictate the games, but he dictated the game to them with ball movement over the entire field and I was mighty impressed.
I was so impressed with Eli, I could only remember one play where I was disappointed in his play. At the time the score was 26-9 and the Giants have their first possession after the failed punt/safety. On a first and 10 for the Giants in Niners territory, Eli scrambles to his right and throws across his body to the Burress who was on the left sideline. The pass fell incomplete but as I was walking out of the stadium I remember that being the only time I was mad at him. In fact a few offensive plays earlier I was very happy when he took the sack on third down right before the safety, as I am being to fell like during the summer he had an “a ha” moment where the light bulb went off and he was able to know what he had to do to be a successful NFL quarterback.
