The 2012 Olympic Logo designer is obviously a Simpsons fan!

by user Alex Holowczak

London won the bid for the 2012 Olympic Games. The taxpayer didn't really care, but the government praised the GDP Potential. But that's for another article on another site.

The London 2012 Olympics were won with this logo:

It is wonderful simplicity. The bow in the Olympic colours is in the shape of the River Thames through London. It shows everything it needs to show, and is simplicity personified.

Then, this week, Lord Sebastien Coe presented the new logo:

By contrast, this hypermodern design shows London and the Olympic rings on 4 "things" that actually say 2012, if you use your imagination. It wasn't immediately obvious. Also, it doesn't take quite as much imagination for you to see that the 1 and the second 2 of the logo have euphamistic connertains to their positioning too. Indeed it looks like Lisa Simpson in the 0 and the 2...

"A logo you have to look twice at, is a bad logo."

Over the last few days in Britain, there has been disapproval of the logo in the press, and the people too. The design is perhaps tangeable, but the price tag of £400,000 is frankly astonishing. I bet a creative 10 year old could come up with something similar.

But now there are new fears. Coming back to The Simpsons, specifically the episode where they scav a holiday to Japan, the family see a programme on TV that gives out epileptic seizures. Well, the same is apparently true of this new logo, 8 people have already looked at it and suffered that problem.

Now, there are officials claiming it to be scrapped on these grounds. The people are also revolting it seems - in just a couple of days there have been 40,000 signatures to an online petition calling it to be scrapped. This number has gone up 5,000 in the time it took me to write this article. There are groups too on Facebook and Myspace opposing the logo. With Lord Coe claiming it to be "The People's Games", it'll be interesting to see if he listens to the people.

Personally, it looks rubbish. You can't distinguish the numbers without looking closely. The numbers should be much clearer, in my opinion. And it certainly wasn't worth my taxed share in the £400,000 spent on it.

  • The petition can be found here. It's UK only though.

Oops, yes, omnicom, (right next to the n, the m on the keyboard...) And it says it was designed by Omnicom, not Omnicom Europe... Omnicom's HQ is in Madison Avenue, New York City. Perhaps the "Europe" was just not printed in my 'paper, since we're in Europe though?

+ is the international dialling code, I.e. you add 44 if you're abroad. The bit in brackets, i.e. "0", is what a British user would dial. So...
  • A Brit would ring 020 7298 7007
  • A foreigner would ring 4420 7298 7007

British people don't consider themselves part of Europe (the government does too). To be honest, most people moan about the US too, particularly George Bush. Especially last week... He jumps on the global warming bandwagon and wants to change everything the rest of the world has started just because he's involved now... But anyways... I know you're mocking, it's fine.

Only douchebags run for President in the US. That is why Jay Mariotti is running on the Republican ticket in 2008.

Gerald Ford: Say, Homer, do you like football?

Homer: Do I ever!

Gerald Ford: Do you like nachos?

Homer: Yes, Mr. Ford.

Gerald Ford: Well, why don't you come over and watch the game and we'll have nachos, and then some beer.

(Homer and Ford cross the street together.)

Which is the worse rip-off: $400,000 (UK) for a crappy logo (is that Bart Simpson jerking off?) or $500,000 (US) per year for Mariotti's garbage in the Sun-Times?

£400,000, not $400,000. It's actually closer $750,000. We don't have UK dollars. So ours is worse. Nobody in Perth will care about Mariotti, whereas someone might care in Perth if they get a siezure about the Olympic logo. It's utilitarianism. Our logo will displease more people.

Rule of thumb in Britain - make your own sandwiches for lunch. It's much cheaper, healthier etc. $10 for a sandwich? £5!? Why on earth did you buy it!? Make your own for a tenth of the price. £1.50 for a sandwich if you buy it out. Plan in advance is the cheapest way of eating over here.

Not all British food is terrible though. THey have the BEST Indian food (kinda funny what imperialism does) and really good mustard (Colemans) and there was this finer dining establishment while I was in London that served up classic Brit food - not fish n chips. I had marrow bones and they were delicious. Everything on the menu was discusting like that but totally awesome to eat. Black pudding? Awesome, even though it's like eating a big cow scab.

Not surprising - the main ingredient of black pudding is pig's blood. Chicken Tikka Masala was invented in Glasgow, as well, so we have a lot of Indian cuisine. The reason simply, India was part of our empire, and so a lot of them make/have made their way over here as they can speak the language. Fish and chips are true British food.

To be honest, the only thing that annoys me is that Charles will come to the throne (eventually) as King George VII. There's nothing wrong with him becoming King Charles III. Just because George is the Hanover name. Frustrating...

No, he can be King. The rules appear to have changed... You'd be perfectly correct for 1936 - of course - King Edward VII abdicated because of it. Charles will come to the throne, most just don't want him to take it with "Queen" Camilla. They prefer "Consort". I can see her being called "Queen" though.
