The 2006 Open Championship - The Course Guide

by user Alex Holowczak

The 2006 Open Championship will be played on the Royal Liverpool Links at Hoylake. It comes from the same area as Royal Lytham & St. Annes and Royal Birkdale, both of which are regular on the Open rota.

Royal Liverpool is hosting it's first Open since 1967, when Roberto di Vicenzo beat Jack Nicklaus to win the title. The club then fell out of favour, and some adjustments to the course were made to bring it up to standard.

The result is the 2006 layout, shown below. The course has been changed in terms of the order they are played in, in order to bring the start area closer to the Clubhouse, which is a new addition to the club.

It should provide a test for all the players this week, but will not overpunish, like the atrocious Winged Foot and Shinnecock Hills over in the US, which have lead to scores of well over par winning the championship. This course should be a test, while providing birdie opportunities. It is tough, but not unfair.

Royal Liverpool Golf Club was founded in 1869 and became famous for inaugurating the Amateur Championship in 1885. The Open was first played there in 1897 and won by Harold Hilton, a member of the club, who beat James Braid by one shot. The course measured 6,150 yards and Hilton, an amateur, had rounds of 80-75-84-75 for a 314 total.

The Course

Hole 1

"Royal", Par 4, 454 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool1.jpg
The right side of the fairway gives a view of the green as it angles away to the left between bunkers.

Hole 2

"Stand", Par 4, 436 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool2.jpg
There are bunkers on both sides of the fairway and the green slopes away on both sides.

Hole 3

"Course", Par 4, 429 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool3.jpg
A sharp dog-leg to the right around the out-of-bounds practice ground that runs all the way to the green.

Hole 4

"Road", Par 4, 372 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool4.jpg
New bunkers guard the left side of the fairway. The green falls away from front to back.

Hole 5

"Long", Par 5, 529 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool5.jpg
A big left-swinging dog-leg between gorse on the left and bunkers right. Two-tier green adds to difficulties.

Hole 6

"New", Par 3, 202 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool6.jpg
Prevailing wind is against and from the right with the green well bunkered at the front.

Hole 7

"Telegraph", Par 4, 453 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool7.jpg
A tight driving hole with a deep bunker guarding the front left of the green.

Hole 8

"Briars," Par 4, 423 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool8.jpg
The fairway is hidden behind and out-of-bounds corner, then swings gently to the left.

Hole 9

"Dowie, Par 3, 198 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool9.jpg
The narrow green is set beyond bunkers left and right and also surrounded by humps and hollows.

Hole 10

"Far", Par 5, 534 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool10.jpg
A lone bunker threatens at the front right of the green and the ground falls away on the other side.

Hole 11

"Punch Bowl", Par 4, 393 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool11.jpg
The first of four holes running along the shore. The green angles away sharply to the right.

Hole 12

"Dee", Par 4, 448 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool12.jpg
Sloping fairway throws the ball off to the right as the hole turns left to a raised green.

Hole 13

"Alps", Par 3, 198 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool13.jpg
Tough short hole with the green set well back into sandhills that block the left side.

Hole 14

"Hilbre", Par 4, 456 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool14.jpg
Sharp right-to-left dog-leg with the corner well bunkered. Green drops away into a hollow on the right.

Hole 15

"Rushes", Par 3, 161 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool15.jpg
A simple-looking hole from an elevated tee but recovery shots are tricky for anyone who misses the green.

Hole 16

"Field", Par 5, 554 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool16.jpg
Bunkers on the left and a deep grassy hollow on the right protect the green.

Hole 17

"Lake", Par 4, 459 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool17.jpg
Bunkers left and right demand accuracy from the tee before a second shot to a two-tier green.

Hole 18

"Dun", Par 5, 560 yards Image:RoyalLiverpool18.jpg
The out-of-bounds practice ground on the right threatens both the drive and the second shot.

Great stuff Alex, do you have anythign on the difficuly of the holes and where they rank next to each other? Whcih ones are the hardest and easiest? That 6 hole looks tough if theres a lot of wind coming at you, it could get you in trouble.

6 is very tough, with the two tier green. The mounds around the green help gather the ball, so it may not be that bad. If memory serves, 13 is easyish, I'll have to check the Stroke Index.

Oh, and 6 could well be into the wind, look at the map top-right - the wind would come from the sea.

However, I cannot find a stroke index after a lot of searching. I did read that some pundits expect "a lot of birdie opportunities", so the final score could be very low (as in -15 to -20 low).

And the Open has par 72, 4 for each hole. Old scores were written like that... two under par would be "two under fours". I.e. on average each hole was a par 4.

I just wanted to make a note of that in light of you saying that they "overpunish" at the U.S. Open. 72 is the golfing standard at 95% of professional tournaments. Besides, they WANT the U.S. Open to be really, really hard. It makes really low scores (like Tiger's win at Pebble Beach) look that much more spectactular.
