The (NEW) York Yankees

by DRotch19

The New York Yankees have started their post all-star break off in HUGE fashion. They stole 3 of 4 from Tampa, then they took 3 of 4 from Toronto, followed by another 3 of 4 from Tampa Bay. Let's face it everyone, they are facing bad teams right now, with two recent losses to the Baltimore Orioles.  But still, something they haven't done this year yet; destroy the teams that they should destroy. After scoring a season high 17 runs on saturday night, they stepped it up one more notch, plating a season high 21 runs, going hand-in-hand with a season high 25 hits in the series finale with the Devil Rays.

Although the Yankees pitching has remained mediocre, this could be all the Bronx Bombers need if they keep slugging at this *New* York Yankees pace. The hot-hitting has seemed to flow from top to bottom in the Yankees batting order, seeming to still skip over left-hander Johnny Damon. The Yankees batting order has been as hot as any in the majors. July has been good to the Bombers. Take a look at 1-9 of the Yankee order.

Melky Cabrera has seemed to fit in the leadoff spot while Damon is struggling, hitting .368 over July, chasing his average up 24 points to a respectable .283.

Derek Jeter has put up his lowest monthly average of the year, .318 as his average is still a highly ranked .332

Bobby Abreu is scorching the ball this month, with his average at .370 for July. He's hit 4 homeruns, and added 6 doubles and 22 rbi this month. His season average has climbed to .273

Alex Rodriguez has slowed down this month. Although his average has suffered a minor setback, his walk total is still up, and he has plated 20 more runs. He adds to his league leading totals in both homeruns and rbi. He has 34 homeruns, and 99 RBIs. His career homerun total is at 498, 2 away from the magic 500.

Hideki Matsui has been one of the hottest hitters in baseball. Hitting at a clip of .349, he has added 9 homeruns and 17 rbi, while having his OBP over .400 for July. He had a career-high 5 hits in a 21-4 blowout of the Devil Rays.

Jorge Posada has kept his season average by hitting the same, .333, in the month of July. Although his rbi total is down for the month, his incredible OBP of .459 has been tops of the Yankees.

Robinson Cano. This kid is finally remembering the season he had last year. Hitting at a .377 pace for July, Cano has found his power-swing, hitting 5 homeruns with 17 rbi, and also raising his season average to .291. Cano is also a smooth-handed potential gold glove winner.

Andy Phillips may have secured his spot in the Yankee lineup. It seems Andy is coming up with clutch whenever the Yankees need one, adding 13 rbi. Hitting .348 this month, his season average stands at .306. He also plays a gold-glove first base.

Shelley Duncan. The newcomer to the Yankees lineup has seemed to lift the team's spirits a little bit. Whether it be his smiling face, or his ridiculous high-fives, or just his high spirit, the Yankees seem to feed off of it. (He also has 3 homeruns in 3 games, plating 7 runners in the process.) Shelly was recently sent back to the minors, as Melky and Damon find themselves playing side by side more often.

As noticed, the Yankees have put their quarters in, and have boarded the ride, hopefully taking them all the way to the finish of the season. If Johnny Damon can step it up, he could really help out in the lead off spot. He can hit, run, and even flash the leather (just ask Devil Rays 3B Akinori Iwamura). If he can get his OBP up and start scoring some runs, he could be a very big help at the leadoff spot. But if not, aforementioned Melky Cabrera has seemingly seized the role as well.

If the Yankees pitching could follow in the footsteps of their hitting, the Yankees could make a serious push into the playoffs. They are 8 games behind the Redsox in the East, and remain 5 games back in the wildcard.

With about 58 games left, anything can happen.

No...the Yankees are done, and it's sad that the lowly O's have beaten them...the yanks recent winning streak has come at teh expense of 6 games with teh D-rays, a series with the blue jays, and (correct me if i'm wrong) a series with KC?

Haha of course. But the fact that they have been hitting the hell out of the ball is a good sign. I would never count the Yankees out of anything. Maybe the fiery Red Sox are outta the question, but you can't say the Wild Card is out of the Yankees reach. Time will tell.

It's definitely a good sign that they're hitting the crap outta the ball, but they gotta do it against good pitching now. TAMPA BAY and KANSAS CITY? They should've killed them and I'm surprised that the Red Sox aren't doing the sane thing (well, at least they get the wins). But, there's no excuse for losing to Baltimore with the lineup they have. Two in a row. In the situation that the Yankees are in right now, they can't lose to a team like Baltimore (even though they've won about 8 of their last 12). They're facing good teams soon, and the Red Sox are facing mediocre teams, so my advice to the Yanks: take advantage of the trade deadline and money and GET SOME GOOD PITCHING. That's the thing that's killing them.

If you take a mediocre team (NYY) and put them up against a bad team (TB, TOR, KC), the mediocre team will probably look great. All the stats for the players on the mediocre team will look great. Mediocre hitting looks like great hitting when it is up against piss poor pitching.

And it's not like this stuff happens occasionally. They just got crushed by the Yankees recently, and I believe they have the worst bullpen ERA. They have 8 guys in there, and Maddon doesn't know who to put in there cuz they all suck. Hopefully, Wheeler will help Reyes and the rest of the team out as a good set up man...

Did you really just call the Yankees' hitting "mediocre"? They've scored the second-most runs in all of baseball this year.

Johnny Damon wants to rely on his power in my opinion. From '05 to '06, he went from 10 home runs to 24. His average is definitely going down though. He's hitting .242 now, and is having the worst average he's ever had in his career so far. He's gotta step it up. It's gonna take more than just Posada, Jeet and AROD to do everything. Sure, Hideki is stepping it up, and so is Abreu and Cano, but the leadoff man is key in my opinion. You got a guy who leads in HRs and RBIs, and is batting around .300, and is one of the most feared men in baseball today. In front of him, you got a guy hitting .330s and can drive in runs. Even though his OBP is .342, I think he needs to start getting some hits.

The Yankees do need some pitching. But I am a strong believer in Phil Hughes, and he is set to be back with the Yankees after his last rehab start today. So hopefully he will step it up and he can rid ourselves of Kei Igawa, because either he is not ready, or he's just plain bad. Also, we need to give the vets like Clemens and Pettite some run support. It seems we hit a lot when Igawa is on the hill, but not when these guys are. Notice I didn't say anything about Mussina. That is because I also am a firm believer that its not run support killing him, it's him being straight up inconsistent and missing his spots. His 88 mph fastball isn't good enough unless he has his pinpoint accuracy. Chien-Ming Wang is obviously the ace on the staff, and just needs to keep pitching the way he has been.

Yanks will be where you and I will be for the playoffs. At home, on the couch, watching the games on TV.

If New Yorkers are so urbane and civilized, how about some more creativity with the adjectives? Why is everything "HUGE" If I hear one more New Yorker say that, I am going to vomit. How about throwing in a "massive" or a "gynormous" now and again? This also probably wasn't the right column to write just after they dropped 2 games to Boston over the weekend. But, I think the Yanks are certainly in it for the Wild Card. If they can take 6 or 7 out of 8 against Detroit, they definitely have a shot.

Well said. But dropping 2 to Boston would be a little more respectable than Baltimore, like they did.
