Texas Tribute to Virginia Tech

So, Texas is now doing their part in supporting the tragedy at Virginia Tech. They have made white rubber wrist bands with Longhorn and Virginia Tech logos and with the words "There's Hope." No matter what you think about this gesture, there is a connection here. Charles Whitman shot and killed 14 people from high a top the Texas Tower back in August 1966. I can't believe there is anyone who attends the University of Texas who doesn't look up at the Texas Tower and NOT think about that killing spree. In fact, there are still bullet holes around the campus that are constant reminders of the horror that happened there.
I know there are some folks who think the media has gone way overboard during the reporting of the Virginia Tech shootings. I think they did when they plastered the killer's "media manifesto" all over the web. When that happened, the killer won. This was pre-meditated and the thing he wanted was to have all his pictures and video shown to the world. So, the killer got what he wanted, and I think that is a travesty. Now the next Freak Show will be looking to one-up the Virginia Tech killer and will come up with some kind of "holographic manifesto" and some kind of website to get his/her picture all across the world. At some point, the media has to have some kind of responsibility and think about how their reporting will affect the future, rather than a quick ratings increase.
Overall, I think if any university is to conduct some kind of tribute, Texas is the university to do it. We sport fans always talk about records and usually if Texas holds a record, I'm one to remind people. For almost 41 years, Texas held the record for the worst campus massacre...now I didn't brag about that one...but that was a record I would have liked Texas to keep. No other university should have had to endure a tragedy like this, but like Texas students, Virginia Tech students from now until forever will always be reminded of this massacre. I think that's sad.
