The Angels put the finishing touches an an opening series sweep Wednesday afternoon as they downed the Rangers 5-3 in front of 35,701 at Anaheim. Ervin Santana (1-0 2.57) got the win by throwing 7 innings while giving up 2 runs on 4 hits and a walk. His 6 K outing was the longest for the Angels' starters this short season thus far. His counterpart - Brandon McCarthy (0-1, 4.50) went 6 innings giving up 5 runs, 3 earned on 10 hits and one walk.
Kotchman continued his hot hitting for the Angels going 2-4 with and RBI, and Anderson showed some life with 2 hits, 2 runs, and an RBI of his own.
Texas' Mike Young had 2 hits, but also committed an error in that contributed to the 4 run first of the Angels.
Texas looked like is was still in Spring training during the 1st inning. while there was only one error recorded, they did their impression of a little league team with miscues by Mike Young, McCarthy, and the infamous center fielder catches the fly, throws home to miss the runner scoring then having the catcher throw the ball back into center but luckily the second baseman catches it play. It was really ugly, and the Angels scored 4 in the inning with hits by Matthews and Guerrero.
The Rangers cut the lead in half in the 3rd with a double by Wilkerson, a single by Cruz and a sacrifice fly by Laird.
The Angels added an insurance run in the 5th on a single by Anderson, a double by Kotchman, and a fielders choice by Kendrick.
With KRod coming in to close the game, Texas loaded the bases in the ninth with singles by Young and Blalock and a walk by Kinsler, but they were only able to score 1 on a sac fly by Wilkerson.
The Angels will next host the Oakland Athletics for 4 games. Texas is headed to Boston for 3 games over the weekend.
