The 2007 season for both Angels and Rangers started with walks. 8 of them to be precise. John Lackey walked the first two batters he faced, but got out of trouble without any damage in the first with a double play and a fly out. Kevin Millwood was not so fortunate. After a leadoff walk to Gary Matthews Jr. and a strike out of Orlando Cabrera, the main man of the Angels offense - Vlad Guerrero - nailed a double down the 3rd base line to bring Matthews home.
Lackey went on to pitch 5 innings giving up 1 unearned run on 4 hits and 4 walks with 5 strike outs. Millwood would go 5 as well, but gave up 3 runs on 5 hits, 2 walks and 5 strikeouts.
Casey Kotchman hit a home run in the 2nd for the Angels and Ian Kinsler matched him in the 3rd for the Ranger's only run.
The Angels demonstrated their new bullpen to great effectiveness with Speier pitching 2 innings then handing the ball over to the Shields/KRod duo of years past. The only real blemish on the Angels' side were the two errors - by Napoli and Matthews. It looks from this small sample that the team still needs to work on defense.
As for the Rangers, Lofton showed his legs are not as old as his birth certificate says by stealing 2 bases. Blalock also showed he is ready for the season by scattering a double and a single.
On the night, the Angels went to 1-0 with a 4-1 victory. The Rangers fell to 0-1.
