Big news out of Austin, TX, this morning. University of Texas senior cornerback Tarell Brown was arrested on misdemeanor charges of possession of a firearm and two ounces or less of marijuana. Also arrested was former linebacker Aaron Harris.
This news is particularly large coming in the same week that Texas will square off against the number one team in the country, Ohio State University. Brown would have the assignment of covering the versatile offensive threat Ted Ginn, Jr..
Whether or not he will play has not yet been decided. According to ESPN.com, Mack Brown told the Austin American-Statesman that he was aware of the situation, but had not spoken to the cornerback about it yet.
As far as the game goes, Brown's absence would hurt, but not cripple, a strong UT secondary featuring upperclassmen Aaron Ross (Sr.), Michael Griffin (Sr.) and Marcus Griffin (Jr.) One thing Brown did bring, however, was defensive leadership. His swagger, which sometimes crosses the line into downright arrogance, was a large motivator for the defensive unit.
This is the third arrest in the past year for the UT football program. Wide receiver Myron Hardy was arrested for possession of an illegal knife, and running back Ramonce Taylor (who has since transferred) was arrested for possession of marijuana.
