The Texas Bowl replaced the now-defunct Houston Bowl in 2006. After the Houston Bowl collapsed under financial difficulties, Lone Star Sports Entertainment, a division of the NFL's Houston Texans, was a approved to take over game managing duties, and shortly after, the NFL Network purchased television and naming rights to the bowl.
The Texas Bowl name and logo were unveiled in August, 2006, and it was announced that the Big 12, Conference USA, and Big East would all have affiliations with the bowl, along with Texas Christian University of the Mountain West Conference.
The Big East and Conference USA have a rotating commitment until 2009, while the Big 12 is slated to provide a team all four years. However, due to the inclusion of two Big 12 teams in the 2007 Bowl Championship Series, TCU took over the spot.
The event is held at Houston's Reliant Stadium, also the home of the former Houston Bowl.
