Terrell Owens - The Cowboy

Mark it on your calendars - March 15, 2006, a Wednesday - I said that Terrell Owens is going to be a Cowboy. I'm not saying maybe, I'm not saying probably, I'm not saying I think...he will be a Cowboy.

ESPN reported today that the Eagles have cut full-time pain in the butt Terrell Owens to avoid paying him a $5 million bonus he was due. Hours later, ESPN announced the release of another troubled wide receiver from Dallas, Keyshawn Johnson. Johnson was the Cowboys' leading receiver last year, being tops on the team in receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns. Johnson was seeking a contract extension and a raise.

To most, including myself, the presence of Keyshawn was the only thing preventing the 'Boys from acquiring Owens. Coach Bill Parcells has a long past of dealing with trouble players (Lawrence Taylor, Brian Cox, Keyshawn Johnson, to name a few), but two egocentric wide receivers with clubhouse problems is more than any coach could handle. Now, that one buffer is gone and the Cowboys need a go-to receiver.

While Owens's physical ability is terribly attractive, are the Cowboys really so desperate that they are willing to overlook his past which is really still in the present? Especially considering just how much he is hated in Texas for his midfield star celebration as a 49er, then for his membership with conference rival Philadelphia.

I would say the Cowboys are not desperate. Aside from Drew Bledsoe and a handful of others, the Cowboys are a very young team. A veteran wide receiver would be nice, but they don't need the help of Owens. And they certainly don't need his clubhouse...how should I say it - chemistry.

Parcells may have a good history of being able to manage egos, but the ego of Owens is unmanagable. History shows that he is a player that seems bent on being a rabble-rouser. He is not merely content to win, he has to be the man that won it. And if someone doesn't recognize that he's the man, then he tears down teammates to show just how is the man. To compile matters, unlike other team leaders that want to be the man when the game is on the line, Owens does not accept the resonsibility that goes with it.

When a team wins, it's because of him. When a team loses, it's because of everyone but him.

Just look at him in San Fransisco. He ripped the coach, the owner, and called his quarterback gay. In Phildelphia, he was happy. At first. Then what happened? They lost the Super Bowl, and suddenly McNabb, who he'd claimed to be friends with, was a wuss that lost his lunch in crunch time. Suddenly, McNabb couldn't cut it. All of a sudden, the team couldn't win and it was everybody's fault but his own. Owens led the league in receptions, but he still complained he was not getting the ball enough.

He is eternally discontent.

Is that really what any team would want? A wide receiver that calls his quarterback gay if he's not getting the ball often enough? Forget about his physical ability. No team needs the kind of clubhouse division that Owens necessarily brings with himself. It's like trying to cure a cold using a needle infected with Ebola.

Yes, Owens will be a Cowboy. But don't expect us to be happy about it. And when this team gets dismantled from the inside out by the irrepresible force that is the Owens ego, Jerry Jones can't say he wasn't warned.

Do you think Parcells can tame Owen's personality?

I want him out of the NFC East. Even if he's a complainer, he's still good.

I forget why he's supposed to go to Denver, but at the end of the season, that's what everyone was saying. Can't wait to see what TO would say about the Fake. "If it looks like a snake, and smells like a snake, then it's probably throwing off balance into triple coverage."</P>

<P/>

I think that Parcells-Jones et al would pass on TO. He's a phenomenal player, and Parcells has that rep for keeping players in line, but that rep came from keeping HIS players in line, not free agents. I don't think Parcells goes out of his way to find high upside guys with makeup issues. But the Cowboys aren't going to get better without impact offensive players, and Terry Glenn is no longer one of those. (Was he ever?) So, who knows. Maybe Bill agrees with me, that TO is -wait for it- misunderstood. He is without tact, perspective, or reticence, but the guy wants to play and he wants to win, and I'll bet that next year, wherever he ends up, he shuts up. And he'll have a phenomenal season.

Next year he'll shut up and have a phenomenal season. That's what they said when he went to Philly. Everyone excused his behavior in San Fran and said he just wants to play for a winner.

Well, like I said, he was happy for a year. They went to the Superbowl, and he was happy until they lost in the Superbowl. He's not content just to win, he has to be the reason they're winning, and he needs everyone to acknowledge it. He doesn't just want to win, he wants more than that. That's why he'll never fit in, no matter where he goes.

And I know a lot of people are talking about him going to Denver. But, the Cowboys need him more than Denver does. Denver could certainly use a WR like that, but they do still have Rod Smith and Ashley Lelie. As someone already said here, all the Cowboys have now is Terry Glenn. And I love Glenn to death, but he's not a go-to receiver. He's a very, very good second option.

I think the fact that the Cowboys need him more than Denver does will be the selling point. And I think the fact that he could play for a young, up-and-coming team like the Cowboys will be more enticing than playing for a Denver team that's just getting older, and had to make such a big point to celebrate that it just won its first playoff game since Elway left.

I agree w/ASwaff. I was just talking about next year. But sitting out for most of a season has to have had some kind of effect on him. If TO were to fire Drew Rosenhaus and hire me as his agent, I would tell him not to talk to the media. Ever. That would end all his problems.

I agree, not talking to the media would end all of his problems. But, it's difficult to get a person that loves the limelight so much to stop seeking for it. It's almost like he seems to thrive on self-destruction. He's like Barry Bonds - he KNOWS that any time he opens his mouth it will only cause problems, but he just won't stop.

By the way, to answer Awright's first question - no, I don't think Parcell's can tame Owens. That's why I called Owens untamable. I don't think that anyone, other than perhaps a psychiatrist, can stop him from being the destructive force that he's been. He needs to completely change as a person. It's going to require him to get a bit of self-control and humility. I don't think Parcells can do that.

I suggest Bill hire LT as an assistant coach and threathen to sic him on TO if he is quoted just once in the media dissing the coach, the owner or any teammates.
