Tastelessness hits a new low...CNNSI does "article" on athletes who have died in plane crashes.

The death of Cory Lidle in a tragic plane crash Tuesday will be remembered for numerous reasons. The initial fear of a terrorist attack, then the realization on who was involved and how it affected the sports world, to reminders of how truly short life is.

CNNSI decided that this was a good opportunity to do a pictorial of athletes who have died in plane crashes. I am sure some editor thought this would be a tribute to the people who have perished in the past, including Roberto Clemente and Thurman Munson. However, in times of tragedies, reminding people of past tragedies is distasteful and insensitive. I will play Devil's Advocate and suggest that CNNSI did not mean it as such, but that's how this came off. It would almost be as bad as CNNSI doing a pictorial of "NBA Athletes shot at by thugs" after the Stephen Jackson incident or "NFL Hall Of Fame Athletes who were charged with killing their spouses" after the OJ Simpson incident.

The pictorial is and was in bad taste and should not have been brought up as teammates and family members of Cory Lidle mourn his death. There is a time and a place for any subject, but immediately after a tragedy is not the time.

I disagree. I think its relevant, it does serve as a tribute and memorial and it shows that Lidle wasn't part of some freak accident that's never happened before. When Sept 11 happened news places reminiced about the first WTC bombing, OK City, etc. Relating to the past and others is part of the mourning and healing process. it's not tasteless, it's human nature.

I am with CPCP. The piece on CNNSI was not glorifying the deaths of these athletes, but linking them to what happend on Tuesday. We did the same thing on the radio station yesterday morning, and my response was shock. Not because I thought it was a bad thing, but because I had not realized how many athlese have passed in plane flights.

I still don't think that's more tasteless than CNN's headline, "Highrise Horror." It sounded more like a haunted house than a tragic plane accident.

I think I agree. ESPN does a sidebar, SI does images and makes a whole hullaballo about it. I know they're Sports Illustrated, but... it's a bit much.

How about a story on the other tens of thousands of people that die everyday. This 'story' was blown out of proportion becasue it was New York. It concerned two people and the owner of the apartment. That's it. This was a non-story if the guy flying really was "just a regular guy", but he was a Yankee, so it suddenly becomes relevant to everyone...

and the only reason they did the piece was because they knew people would read it - SENSATIONALISM rules supreme these days...

Isn't that the reason you do any story...for people to read it?
