An emotional day all around at Yankee Stadium. Melanie Lidle, widow of Cory Lidle (who was killed in a plane crash last October), and her son Christopher got to throw out the first pitch to start the 2007 season. Then, halfway through the third inning, Bobby Murcer appeared on the Yanks' Diamondvision, much to a standing ovation and a roar from the crowd.

Highlights from the game:

  • Alex Rodriguez misplays a pop-up in the first, then strikes out in the bottom half thereof, then reedems himself by hitting the game-winning homer in the bottom of the eighth to cap off an onslaught of D-Rays relief pitching
  • Carl Pavano gets off to a great start, but doesn't get out of the fifth inning when the Rays take a 5-3 lead
  • Derek Jeter and Jason Giambi getting hits when they mattered the most

A come-from-behind win on Opening Day...same as last year against the Royals.

Elijah Dukes ripped a HR in his first MLB AB (walked in first plate appearance). Go Devil Rays!

ARod got screwed on the error in the first. Posada lost the ball in the dark sky and ARod came all the way in from third and over-ran the ball, never touched it. Scorekeeper must have been a Rays fan.

I'm a Rays fan and that wasn't an error. It had no consequence, he didn't touch it.

Scorer must've been a Jeter fan... Did they switch Jeets error to a hit for Aki?

Delmon Young gets compared to Vladdy and no one bats an eye.

Speaking of Vlad, he homered on his first swing of 2005 and 2006 but could only muster up an RBI double on his first swing this season.

They were talking about his hands, not skills.

they said it after he almost doubled up Giambi at first on a fly ball.

Then we both missed a Vladdy reference. He also paid the first Kangaroo Court fine of 2007.
