Curt Schilling earned his career 200th win as the Boston Red Sox defeated the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 6-4 Saturday night in Boston. Schilling pitched 7 innings, allowing 4 hits, no walks, and getting 7 K's. Tampa Bay starter Seth McClung lasted just five innings, getting his sixth loss of the season as he allowed 6 runs, giving up five walks with no strikeouts.
The scoring began in the first inning for Boston, with David Ortiz getting his 47th RBI of the year on a sacrifice fly that scored Kevin Youkilis, who was subbing in left field for the resting Manny Ramirez. In the top of the second 1B Greg Norton singled, sending in 3B Ty Wigginton, making it 1-1. C Josh Paul also singled, sending in Norton and giving Tampa their only lead of the night at 2-1.
Boston did not allow the lead to stand for long. The home half of the second saw more scoring, with Mark Loretta, Kevin Youkilis, and David Ortiz all collecting RBIs. Things began in the 2nd for Boston with a J.T. Snow single; Willie Harris then reached first on a fielder's choice. Youkilis was walked, and a Mark Loretta single sent Harris home, tying the game. Next Ortiz was intentionally walked, but Trot Nixon made them pay with a deep double that scored Youkilis and Loretta, making it 4-2 Boston. A wild pitch let Ortiz score, making it 5-2 Boston, the last scoring until the fourth inning for either team.
In the bottom of the fourth Youkilis was again walked, then another Loretta single sent him to second. Another walk of Ortiz brought up Nixon again, who sent the baseball to first, letting Youkilis score - and making it 6-2 Boston.
Tampa Bay immediately struck back in the 5th, starting things off with a Travis Lee single. Josh Paul doubled, then so did Joey Gathright, letting Lee and Paul score; the game was now 6-4 Boston. Julio Lugo flied out, Carl Crawford popped out, then Toby Hall struck out swinging to end the inning.
Schilling pitched until the 7th; Keith Foulke came in for the 8th. He got two quick outs, then Julio Lugo got his one hit of the night, a single. Tampa couldn't make anything of it, though, and Jonathan Papelbon came in for Boston in the ninth. He got three quick outs, ending the game and getting his 18th save on the season. The bottom of the order got it done for Tampa tonight; they got seven of the team's eight hits.
