On the mound today are Tim Wakefield (3-6, 4.57ERA) for the Red Sox and Mark Hendrickson (3-4, 3.50ERA) for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
In the first inning, SS Julio Lugo flies out, then LF Carl Crawford singles to right field. Crawford steals second succesfully, then is picked off at second for the second out. 2B Ty Wigginton grounds out. In the home half, the Red Sox - including leadoff hitter Coco Crisp - go down in order.
In the second RF Russel Branyan grounds out, then 1B Travis Lee has a possible homer stolen from him by Trot Nixon in right field. C Josh Paul picks up a two-out double, but then 3B Tomas Perez grounds out to Kevin Youkilis, who's returned to his usual position at first base today. Youkilis leads it off in the cleanup spot in the second, and lines out to Lee. 3B Mike Lowell pops out to Travis Lee, then C Doug Mirabelli flies out to end the inning.
CF Joey Gathright grounds out to start off the third, but Julio Lugo gets a double to center field. Carl Crawford grounds out to Youkilis, and Gathright advances to third. DH Jonny Gomes can't get him home, though, as he grounds out to SS Alex Gonzalez. Trot Nixon starts off the third for Boston with a base hit into right field, the team's first hit today. Gonzalez flies out, then LF Willie Harris grounds out for the first two outs of the inning. Crisp pops out to end the inning, leaving Nixon stranded at second.
The fourth sees Wakefield get his first 1-2-3 inning. Boston's half starts with 2B Mark Loretta grounding out; this is followed by DH David Ortiz popping up to center for two quick outs. But then Kevin Youkilis gets a single; Crawford almost manages to catch it, but does hold Youk to a single. Lowell follows up with another base hits, then Mirabelli is walked, giving Nixon the bases loaded with two outs. Then Hendrickson walks Nixon, meaning his second walk of the game is also the first run - it's 1-0 Boston. Hendrickson finally manages to end the inning with an Alex Gonzalez pop-up.
Wakefield gets another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the fifth. In the bottom, Hendrickson's troubles continue, starting off with a Willie Harris double. Crisp grounds out, then Mark Loretta sends Harris home on another double to make it 2-0 Boston. The top of the sixth proves to be another 1-2-3 inning for Wakefield; in the bottom of the fifth, Mirabelli and Nixon start things off by striking out and grounding out, respectively. But, Alex Gonzalez singles, Willie Harris singles, and there are two men on with two outs. Then a Coco Crisp single lets Gonzalez score, making it 3-0 Boston, and that's it for Hendrickson (5.2IP, 8H, 5ER, 3BB, 2 K's). The new pitcher is Shawn Camp; he gives up a two-run single to Mark Loretta, making it 5-0 Boston. Ortiz then gets a right-field single, giving Boston two men on again. The inning finally ends on a force-out of Ortiz at second base as Youkilis sends it right to Julio Lugo, but the Sox scored three runs in the inning and chased out Tampa's starting pitcher.
In the 7th, Wake gets two quick outs, then can't quite cover the bag at first to get Travis Lee. He looks a little hurt after the attempted catch, falling to the ground, but doesn't limp and goes right back to the bag. Then Josh Paul pops out to Coco Crisp to end the top half of the frame. In home half of the inning, Lowell starts things off by lining out to Travis Lee. Doug Mirabelli gets walked, and then Nixon singles to give Boston men on first and second with one down. Alex Gonzalez pops out, then Willie Harris is hit by a pitch. The inning ends without any scoring, though, as Coco Crisp grounds out.
In the 8th, Tomas Perez strikes out, then Joey Gathright singles and steals 2nd. Then Julio Lugo grounds out, Carl Crawford grounds out, and Wakefield's day is done (8IP, 5H, 0ER, 1BB, and 4 K's). Camp's day is done as well in the 8th; Tyler Walker comes in to replace him in the bottom of the 8th. Loretta pops out, Ortiz flies out, and Youkilis grounds out to second to give Walker a quick 1-2-3 inning.
Rudy Seanez will try to handle the 9th today, in an attempt to let Keith Foulke and Jonathan Papelbon rest, with Timlin now on the DL. He gives up a leadoff walk to Jonny Gomes, however - the first time the leadoff man has been on today. Ty Wigginton follows up by striking out, then Russell Branyan lines out to Youkilis for the second out of the inning. Travis Lee, who's 1-3 today with a single (back in the 7th inning), gets on board with a walk, the second of the inning. Seanez walks Josh Paul, and his day is done; Julian Tavarez will come on to try to get the final out of the game. Greg Norton reaches on a passed ball, letting Jonny Gomes score for Tampa's first run of the game; the next batter, Joey Gathright, will represent the tying run. He gets walked, and it's 5-2 Boston. Now Julio Logo is facing Tavarez; he gets walked and it's 5-3 Boston. Crawford singles it to left, and Norton comes in; Joey Gathright tries to come in from second to tie it, but Willie Harris throws it to Mirabelli to get the out to end the game.
