Tale of the Tape: Owens vs. Moss

by Nejoshi

Three weeks into the NFL season, it’s safe to say that Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, two NFL wide receivers that fans love to hate, are done with drama and instead focusing on living up to their billing as the two of the league’s most fantastic players. Quite frankly, it has been extremely easy to loathe these two for what they have done in the past, but it’s hard not to fantasize about having either one on your team right now.

Given the considerable amount of talent surrounding both players – who wouldn’t want Tom Brady or Tony Romo as their QB? – it’s not surprising to see either one succeed like they have; with that said, to make things interesting and promote discussion, let’s ask, who will have the better season: Owens or Moss?

Moss, who had a career worst 553 yards receiving last year, is second in the league with 22 catches and 403 yards to go along with five touchdowns, which is tied for the league lead. With Laurence Maroney and the rushing attack becoming less and less of a focal point of the offense, it’s easy to see Brady and Moss hooking up all season long the way they have already. Moss is by far the most talented receiver Brady has ever had, and we are beginning to see what kind of stats the three-time Super Bowl winner would have put up if he had a Marvin Harrison-like threat earlier in his career.

T.O. has become more of a villain than Moss in recent years, which is really quite impressive if you think about it. But, we are starting to see why the Eagles and now the Cowboys were willing to take a risk on him. Owens isn’t off to the kind of start Moss is, but he has seen his production go up in each of the last three weeks. After a relatively quiet start to the season (3 catches, 87 yards, 1 TD), Owens had a brilliant performance last week against the Bears, the NFC’s Super Bowl representative last year, coming up with 8 catches for 145 yards in Dallas’ statement victory. Tony Romo’s meteoric rise as one of the NFC’s best quarterbacks has gone hand in hand with Owens’ acquisition. Romo has not been afraid to give T.O. the damn ball, and both have benefited from it.

For all the great things these two have done in three games, you still must remember that the season is only 19% over, and there’s plenty of time for these guys to regress. Things are rosy now, but what happens when Dallas gets that two-game losing streak or Moss is finally held down. Moss and Owens always seem to find drama; the way they handle it is what will be interesting to watch as the season progresses.

So, given all that, whom would you rather have for the rest of the season: Owens or Moss?

But seriously, based on talent alone, they are both incredible. They should just shut up a little more often, and let their actions speak for themselves.

Both of these players are great when everything is going good - when they are getting the ball and the team is winning. But these guys can not change who they are. When one of these teams starts to falter - most likely the Cowboys - the drama will be back. So therefore I am going to say that Moss will have the better season, even though I think that T.O. is a physically better receiver. But Moss is in a better situation this year.

TO might be in the better situation. We'll see how the season plays out. But you make good points.

Moss. No question. He os in a better situation, and is the most gifted player in the league. He doesn't even need to sprint to outrun DB's

Moss is definitely on the better team and has the more distinguished quarterback, but dont sleep on Romo and the Cowboys.

i dont believe moss is as bad as the media presumes...point blank the raiders didnt meet his talent level he didnt want to play yes its wrong but its also true the pats can make the playoffs wit 9 wins in the weak afc east so moss wont have no problems a ring wouldnt hurt either ask corey dillon he used to be SO much trouble in cincy simply because they sucked he came here he got a ring n shutted up. i dont think to is going to act up because he knows this is his last chance he got a qb he likes a new coach and more balls thrown to him than a MLB catcher he'll be fine and i think he'll have the better season just becuase of the pats depth n brady likes to spread the ball around

T.O. anyday. T.O. will go down the middle and works hard at what he does. Moss may have more speed than him but all he can do is run one route: vertical. Owens is also much stronger and unlike moss who goes down after being once, owens can take three players and still go all the way. Not only that Owens is much tougher as he has had to play with a broken leg in the super bowl. People always complain about Owens dropping balls but what are they talking about? The man was playing with a broken hand last year. Would Moss have done that? I don't think so. It's pretty hard to catch a football with one hand thats fully functional and Moss would be too much of a pussy to play with that kind of injury.
