Tale of the Tape: Owens vs. Moss

Three weeks into the NFL season, it’s safe to say that Randy Moss and Terrell Owens, two NFL wide receivers that fans love to hate, are done with drama and instead focusing on living up to their billing as the two of the league’s most fantastic players. Quite frankly, it has been extremely easy to loathe these two for what they have done in the past, but it’s hard not to fantasize about having either one on your team right now.
Given the considerable amount of talent surrounding both players – who wouldn’t want Tom Brady or Tony Romo as their QB? – it’s not surprising to see either one succeed like they have; with that said, to make things interesting and promote discussion, let’s ask, who will have the better season: Owens or Moss?
Moss, who had a career worst 553 yards receiving last year, is second in the league with 22 catches and 403 yards to go along with five touchdowns, which is tied for the league lead. With Laurence Maroney and the rushing attack becoming less and less of a focal point of the offense, it’s easy to see Brady and Moss hooking up all season long the way they have already. Moss is by far the most talented receiver Brady has ever had, and we are beginning to see what kind of stats the three-time Super Bowl winner would have put up if he had a Marvin Harrison-like threat earlier in his career.
T.O. has become more of a villain than Moss in recent years, which is really quite impressive if you think about it. But, we are starting to see why the Eagles and now the Cowboys were willing to take a risk on him. Owens isn’t off to the kind of start Moss is, but he has seen his production go up in each of the last three weeks. After a relatively quiet start to the season (3 catches, 87 yards, 1 TD), Owens had a brilliant performance last week against the Bears, the NFC’s Super Bowl representative last year, coming up with 8 catches for 145 yards in Dallas’ statement victory. Tony Romo’s meteoric rise as one of the NFC’s best quarterbacks has gone hand in hand with Owens’ acquisition. Romo has not been afraid to give T.O. the damn ball, and both have benefited from it.
For all the great things these two have done in three games, you still must remember that the season is only 19% over, and there’s plenty of time for these guys to regress. Things are rosy now, but what happens when Dallas gets that two-game losing streak or Moss is finally held down. Moss and Owens always seem to find drama; the way they handle it is what will be interesting to watch as the season progresses.
So, given all that, whom would you rather have for the rest of the season: Owens or Moss?
