Taking advantage of the intentional walk

Does it make sense for a batter to just step towards the outside of the plate during a 4-pitch walk and smack the ball to oblivion? Not sure if I'm remember correctly, but I think Carlos Beltran did this one time and it worked out for him.

Or is it one of those tacit things in baseball that's just understood?

There's nothing stopping a batter hitting during a IBB. Most tend not to, because if they swing and miss, they'll look just a little bit silly...

I think it's laziness, frankly. I think guys are content to take the base, even though some of those lazy intentional balls come awfully close to the plate. I'd love to see more batters pull a Migeul Cabrera and go after one of those pitches.

OK it was Cabrera and not Beltran. I remember seeing and wondering why the hell other player don't do it.

IMO it is not a bad play if you can pull it off without steping out of the batter's box.

exactly, you can't step outside of the box when swining, other than that, it's tough to hit a pitch well if it is so high and outside as most intentional pitches are... PLUS it's called 'showing up your opponent" and that falls under baseball's book of unwrittn rules...

Why would you try and swing for a hit when the team is GIVING you first base? Just take the base.

If they step on the plate, they're out. That's why they don't try and reach it. I find it more entertaining when the pitcher and catcher fake an intentional walk and throw it down the middle. I remember Dennis "El Presidente" Martinez and Tony Pena pulling that off a few times.

If a player starts attempting to hit intentional walk pitches, he'll catch one in the ear hole his next at bat. Don't mess with the unwritten rules.

I remember Keith Hernandez once slapped at an IBB pitch, hit it -- but was called out for stepping out of the batters box before contact was made.

but what if you got a guy on second or third with first open? i think that's what Cabrera did and he got guys home. it's definitely risky, but maybe appropriate in some situations.

Yeah, I agree with that, Ray. There are some situations where it would be pointless. But some of these time when there are runners at second and third with one out, I'd like to see someone like Howard or Pujols to at least look like they're keeping their eye out for a lazy intentional ball that comes too close to the plate. That's my biggest problem - not that they don't try to hit it, but that they just stand there and don't even seem to be ready in the event that one might get away from the pitcher.
