True Shooting Percentage
True Shooting Percentage is a measure of a player's effectiveness shooting the ball when field goals, 3-point field goals, and free throws are considered. It is very similar to "Points Per Shot Attempt", except that it is PSA multiplied by 50 to be on the same scale (roughly) as Field Goal % (in practice, though, the scale for FG% is about 8 points lower than TS%). Players are rewarded by TS% for making three-pointers (which add an extra point to the score, something not reflected in FG%) and by getting to the line and making free throws. For instance, a 3-point specialist may get undervalued by FG% because many of his shots are, by nature, lower-percentage, but TS% factors this in and reveals his actual shooting value to be quite high. Similarly, a player with a low FG% can still have a decent TS% by making a lot of free throws (Jerry Stackhouse is an example of this type of player). The formula for True Shooting % is:
- Pts / (2*(FGA + (0.44*FTA))
