TO A Go In Dallas: A Day at Cowboys Training Camp

Over the last month or so, everything football related on ESPN has been about whether T.O. and Bill Parcells will get along in Dallas. After spending the day at Cowboys training camp in Oxnard, California, I can tell you first hand that they will. It seems that the two understand each other very well.

In Philly, Andy Reid was not going to give T.O. any of the personal space he needs to operate. Parcells gets that you give T.O. space, and the team stays happy. After talking to Owens a little bit after practice, I came to realize that he really isn't that bad of a guy. If any other receiver thought they could get away with it they could. For instance, if you are playing football with a group of guys at the park, and you are the best wide out on the field, and no one ever throws the ball to you, you would be very upset. Some may even go over and yell at the quarterback until they did get the ball.

Deep down, Owens really cares about the team winning. he just shows it in his own weird way. He knows the only way the team will win is if he produces big time stats. The only way he will do that is if the quarterback throws him the ball a lot. Because Donovan McNabb didn't want to give the ball to T.O. as much as he should have, T.O. became upset. Parcells knows that he has no depth beyond Owens, and an old Terry Glenn at reciever. So why not give the ball to T.O., therefore making the offense better overall. T.O. stays happy and the team does well. I don't see why this was so hard for the folks in Philly to figure out. They should be the ones for starting that mess last year. All they had to do was give T.O. "the damn ball."

But in the end the Eagles had to come off like they were right. They had to look like the good guys. And they did it at the exspense of winning, and also lost the games best receiver. Its not like T.O. comes in and ruins a locker room right off the bat. I talked to DeMarcus Ware and this is what he had to say about T.O. as a teammate. "He's actually a really good guy to be around." The moral of the story is if you are happy with T.O., he is happy with you. If you make him mad, or give him a reason to be mad, it will cost you the season. So can ESPN please stop showing the same pointless stuff on this topic? I know you can find something for Mort to do with his time. Get me a real NFL story, like is Curtis Martin going to have to retire.

Hopefully the Cowboys realize that it is worth their season to keep T.O. happy. Because an unhappy T.O. will ruin a season, just like it did with the Eagles. Like the Eagles last year, the Cowboys are very thin at reciever, so they need T.O. even more. One other thing on the Cowboys and the situation at receiver. Freddy Mitchell looks like a real long shot to make the Cowboys squad. Dalls has a ton of young guys that could be of better use. Fred Ex did get a work out early this week but it didn't go as well as ESPN lets on. Parcells didn't even attend the workout. In the end, its probably best to keep T.O. and Freddy apart anyways.

So, TO's anger in Philly was McNabb's fault for not giving him the ball enough? In 2004, Owens averaged 5.5 receptions per game. That's slightly better than the year before. It wasn't the most he'd gotten in a season, nor was it the most yards he'd gotten in a season, but it tied for the second most yards per reception he'd ever had. And he'd had seasons with fewer catches, so he didn't have much to complain about there. In the seven games he played in 2005, he was averaging 6.7 receptions per game, which was tops in the NFL. He also had 6 TDs in just those 7 games. But he wanted the ball MORE? Somehow it's McNabb's fault that TO won't be content until he gets the ball 8 to 10 times per game?

You also say that more touches for TO means more success. Not necessarily. That wasn't the experience the 49ers had, nor was it the experience the Eagles had when they made it through the playoffs without Owens. The most catches Owens has had in a season was 100 in 2002. He averaged 7.1 catches per game. Despite that, it was the second lowest yards per reception he's ever posted, and it tied for just fourth in terms of touchdowns in a season for his career.

You don't need to excuse Owens. Perhaps things will work out for him in Dallas. Only time will tell. But don't act like he's somehow justified in his past tantrums. He's not. Those problems that Philly and San Fran experienced were 100% his design. That's all there is to it.

Ya ya ya. When the Eagles got TO didn't they finally get to the Super Bowl after three straight losses in the NFC championship? O and he did play on a broken leg. Anyways point is if they dont throw to him enough in Dallas he will get upset. And why wouldnt they because hes the best in the game and their only legit option. So if the Cowboys don't throw to him how else will they win? They need a passing game.

But again, how are you going to credit Owens for helping that team win games he wasn't even playing in? That's completely ridiculous. And yes, he played on a broken leg in a game they lost. So what?

You're right - the Cowboys need a passing game. But my point wasn't that the Cowboys need a passing game. My point was that I don't think TO wants the ball because he knows that the more he gets it, the more likely the team is to win. His motives are much more selfish than that.

To quote my favorite writer, me - "T.O. could go personally kill Osama Bin Laden and bring his head back to Philly, hold it up and say "I did this for you, Eagles fans" and they'd STILL BOO him." - Manny Stiles

Yeah, but then he'd get mad everytime he saw a "support the troops" bumper sticker. After all, those other troops don't deserve praise that should be going to TO. He'd probably shoot a few US troops and sell them out to the enemy in the process of getting Bin Laden.

Amen, Green. That's the first thing I wrote when I predicted that Owens would be a Cowboy (see my article, "Terrell Owens - The Cowboy"). All this stuff about how he's really just a hard worker that wants to play for a winner is the exact same crap he spewed when he left San Fran. It was why he wanted out of San Fran. That's what he kept saying. But then the same problems came up in Philly, problems that HE generated by dissing HIS teammates on national television. I don't care how talented he is, he's a bad teammate and a bad locker room presence. How people can keep buying the same statements is beyond me.
