Survey Says: Biggest Brand in Team Sports Is?

by Sportsbiz

No, it's not the New York Yankees and thanks for playing, we have some lovely parting gifts for you. In fact, the team formerly run by the Boss came in, and you should probably be sitting down before you read this far, as the 29th strongest team brand team among the 122 team brands in MLB, NBA, NFL and the NHL, according to a new study recently released by market research firm Turnkey Sports and Entertainment.

The somewhat surprising [1] results of the Turnkey Team Brand Index found that the strongest team brand among the major sports (for purposes of this study, the NHL was included and MLS was excluded - I didn't design the study, I'm merely reporting) was the Pittsburgh Steelers.

This list has confused me. How was this thing measured? How could the Cowboys be 28th and the Sabres be 4th? How could the Twins be 24th and the Yankees 29th? How are the Canucks 38th and the Mets 43rd? How could the Knicks, Raiders, Celtics and NY Rangers be 90th or below? None of this makes sense.

They talked about this on the radio here in Pittsburgh yesterday. It had so many factors, I just don't see how anyone outside of the MIT math department could figure it out. One factor was how recognizable the logo was. There was also, seat availability at games, prices of tickets, opinions of the stadium, national and global fandom and a slew of other things. As a Steelers fan, it's nice to see, but it doesn't carry much weight cause it's not about net worth, it's about marketability.

Yeah, I wonder how they came about these results. It's strange to me that a "Business" Journal would put teams that have been nearly bankrupt or sold in recent years (Sabres, Predators)so high. Interesting read though.

A study was recently held to see what impact studies had on reality.

These things are always skewed. They put in so many factors that aren't clean numbers and then act like they magically found some pristine answer. It's bullshit to prove their worthiness (yes, the world is so much better off now that these findings have been released) so people will talk about the index and they can keep the funding rolling in...

You can make an Index of anything you want and someone will think you're a genius. But for an Index to truly work, it has to either be VERY narrow, focusing on a few detailed factors or VERY broad, focusing on EVERYTHING.

You can't index a hockey team and football team together and get REAL results. You can't without SOME bias, at least...

John Bogle (the pioneer of index investing) must be sick...

I always thought Index investing was for the lazy...

Then again, I believe the Dart Index outperforms the bulk of indexes to begin with...

Indexing works great if you want to make money. It works bad if you want to make as much money as possible. Of course "making as much money as possible" usually loses your money. Using SMAs are for the almost lazy.

Interesting read, but pretty bogus. Major market teams like the Yankees, Knicks, Lakers, Cubs, Celtics, Chargers etc are just too low. Just to throwing this out there: 50% of all official baseball merchandise sold has a Yankees logo on it.

Remember this, guys and gals. The players get a cut of the proceeds from the items that we purchase. It's a one time check they get (a friend of mine who played in the majors said) each January. It's part of the current CBA (collective barganing agreement) and it's all legal. Granted, Barry Bonds' check may be a little bigger because of the steroids... HA HA! The teams that are in the top ten, such as the Atlanta Braves, do well because they market their teams in print and on cable. Money talks and that's the bottom line.
