Surgery Should End Bagwell's Career

10
Vote

Ex-slugger Jeff Bagwell announced Saturday that he's going on the disabled list and will have surgery to remove bone spurs from his shoulder as "a last resort" to see if he can play again. Dr. James Andrew, Bagwell's surgeon, told Bagwell that he has numerous degenerative bone spurs in his shoulder that need to be removed. If the surgery is sucessful Bagwell may return as a part-time player in a couple of months. It might be more likely that this is the end for the future Hall of Famer.

What makes you think he used steroids? There have been no allegations and his career hasn't shown anything out of the ordinary (other than elite status from the start).

bagwell is a complete assh*le for sticking it to the astros over this contract. they have been overpaying him for years, and that's the thanks he gives them.

From 1993 to 1994, his SLG increased from .516 to .750.

the steroids comment reminds me of the SI article on Bonds... they talked about how his steroids caused his arms to grow too strong and his ligaments tore because of it.

Awright, the slugging jump from one year to the next is what you've got? One flukey year does not indicate steroids. In 1995, his slugging went back down to .496, and it was .570 the year after that. Players from all decades have had flukey seasons. Look at Roger Maris. He broke the homerun record, and to my recollection, he never even broke 40 homeruns again. His injury is also not comparable to Bonds'. Bagwell's shoulder has been arthritic for years. So, unless you're going to claim that steroids causes arthritis...

By the way, Patrick, Bagwell isn't a jerk for what he's doing. The Astros are trying to screw him. He's been overpaid because he allowed the organization to backload his contract so that they could afford to get other players. He took paycuts for years to make room for others. Now he's trying to get the money he rightfully earned from 1999 to 2003. It's not his fault the Astros are trying to get out of his backloaded contract. They shouldn't have done that if they didn't have intentions of paying it.

coincidentally, bagwell's jump coincided with ken caminiti's MVP season, one in which he admitted to rampant steroid use.

that's where you're wrong aswaff. bagwell is guarenteed that money either way. he can no longer play, and want to collect the insurance. his playing (which he can't do anyway) costs the club 15 million dollars which can then be used to resign other players (ie. clemens)

Was Bagwell even considered a prospect? He was drafted in 1989 by the Boston Red Sox, the next year he was traded to the Houston Astros for aging relief pitcher Larry Andersen. He has two mediocre to poor seasons and then coincidentally becomes a power hitter as other mediocre guys begin to juice up.

I know Bagwell is guaranteed that money anyway. The Astros are trying to get out of giving him the money that he's scheduled to earn only because he restructured his contract to backload it. What you just said didn't contradict my other statement. I think you misunderstood me. He restructured his contract in the past so that he would get the money later. Now that he's injured, the Astros are trying to get out of paying him all that backloaded money that he righfully earned for years. He can get insurance, yes, but it's not the same amount that the club backloaded for the last 5 years.

I think y'all are focusing too much on timing. Other players doing steroids doesn't even come close to allowing you to make an accusation against another player.

The team wants to collect insurance, not bagwell. Bagwell is guarenteed all of his money. The team wants him to retire because he sucks and can't play at a high level anyway. If he retires, insurance pays him his 15 million dollars and not the ballclub. Get it? Your information is inaccurate.

I still don't think you're understanding what I'm saying. I know Bagwell is guaranteed his money. I was addressing the issue of the Astros overpaying him. The reason he's been paid so much for the last few years is because of the backloading they did in his contract in years past. He's not getting overpaid, he's just getting compensated for what he did while he was still healthy.
