Superstars

Josh Q. Public: So you wanna be a rap/rock superstar, and live large a big house, five cars, you’re in charge.

Public Service Announcement:

Ok, here we go! Superstars, baby, Superstars! I was watching the Survivor Finale. I thought Yul was Simon Bar Sinister and Becky, his own little Cad. Then I got to thinking. I got to thinking, who is this Ozzy cat then? Then it hit me. Like a ton of bricks. Like a mule f'n kicks. Of course! Kyle Rote Jr. You remember him? His father played for the New York football Giants. He played for the Dallas Tornado in 1973 and led the league in scoring his rookie year. Back before it was cool to play soccer. Before Bend It, before Zidane, not before Pele. Ok, that’s all the soccer players I know. Rote, Jr. won my favorite TV show three times in four years. Nobody could beat him. Nobody. Like the 1986 Boston Celtics. That led me to this. That led me to today’s feature, Superstars:

Superstars baby, Superstars! Sherman set the Way Back Machine to 1975. Kojak, who loves ya, baby, the Six Million Dollar Man, Steve Austin, we can rebuild him, the Captain and Tennille, Love Will Keep Us Together, GI Joes with the kung-fu grip and Pet Rocks. Oh ya, and Superstars. I saw every episode. By far my favorite show. For some reason 1975 sticks in my mind the most. That was the year the Juice won it. I loved that guy. Had the Juicemobiles, my flammable OJ pajamas, all of it. You have to understand, before this cat killed his wife and her boyfriend, especially while he was still playing, he was the man. Running through airports. Running through defenses. In 1975, he rushed for 1817 yards in 14 games. Sixteen TDs. Caught 28 balls for seven more TDs. He was untouchable. Eliot Ness style. He won Superstars that year. OJ won the title by defeating the two former champions. He won by defeating gold medal pole-vaulter Bob Seagren. He won by defeating eventual three time champ Kyle Rote Jr. I remember the Juice dominating the bowling competition. I remember Seagren was on his way to win it all again, only to fall down, Mary Decker style, in the bike race. I remember OJ taking second in the rowing. I remember Franco Harris lifting a boatload. I remember watching Hondo Havlicek tear it up in the baseball hit. I rem]ember Lawrence McCutchen, Pistol Pete, Rod Gilbert, [[Lou Brock], Rollie Fingers, Jerry Quarry, Jimmy “the Toy Cannon” Wynn, Yaz and Steve Garvey. I remember them all. As if it were yesterday. How great would be if that show continued today. How great would it be to see LeBron, LT, Johnny Damon and Sidney Crosby go at it? Go at it to see who truly is the best athlete in the world? Must see TV at its best.

Peace out homies. Six Two and Even! josh q. public
