Super Bowl Bound: The New England Patriots

Josh Q. Public: And the rivers shall open for the righteous. And the rivers shall open for the righteous, someday.

Public Service Announcement:

nflrkne.jpg Ok here we go! I have had enough. I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore. Like my main man Popeye always says: “That’s all I can stands, I can’t stands no more.” How much disrespect are we going to take? Haven’t we won three out of the last five Super Bowls? Huh? Haven’t we? Everybody’s San Diegoing. Everybody’s Chicagoing. Everybody’s Colting. Why not us? Why not now? We get disrespected on ESPN. We get disrespected in our own press. We get disrespected by the Pro Bowl selections. C’mon, only Richard Seymour? What a disgrace. But I don’t care. I know things. I know the proof will be in the pudding. Bill Cosby style. I know the cream will rise to the top. Tom Brady does too: “I think this team cares about one bowl, and it certainly isn’t the Pro Bowl.” No, it certainly is not.

Super Bowl baby, Super Bowl. Brady knows Super Bowls. Brain knows Super Bowls. First thing’s first. First we must whoop up on these 8-6 Jaguars. Whoop up on them real good like. Whoop up on them and officially give us the chance to vie for the big prize. The Vince Lombardi Trophy. Is that so far fetched? Doesn’t defense win the big ones? The Patriots have the 5th ranked defense in yards allowed. Already on pace to set a franchise record for fewest points allowed in a 16-game season. The Pats (193) and the Ravens (187) are the only NFL teams that have allowed fewer than 200 points this season. The best front seven in the league. Richard Seymour, Ty Warren, Roosevelt Colvin, Mike Vrabel and the rest. The best front seven, creating pressure and getting after the quarterback. Making things happen. Getting things done. And don’t sleep on the secondary. Decimated year after year. This year, cornerback Asante Samuel is tied for the NFL lead with eight interceptions. And coming back Sunday is my favorite football player. Rodney Harrison. Rodney Harrison. Two-time Pro-Bowler. The heart and soul of the Patriot defense. Back in time for the holidays. Back in time for the Big Dance. Back in time to go Bowling. Earl Anthony style. Super Bowling. Put that Tenacious D together with the best quarterback in the world when the games matter. Put that Tenacious D together with the best quarterback in the world when the games matter and the best coach I’ve ever seen, and you have the makings of one very dangerous football team. Very Dangerous. Nick Dangerous. Johnny Dangerously.

Even with a 10-4 record and a wealth of past success banked, we get treated like Rodney Dangerfield. From here on in, we must kill them. We must incinerate them. Pig after pig. Cow after cow. Village after village. Army after army. So, in this age of parity, with no team head and shoulders above the rest, I ask you, why not us? Why not now?

Peace out homies. Six Two and Even! josh q. public

We are doing great without Maroney, Harrison, Wilfork, Watson, the injuries go on and on. We would be at 11-3 right now and fighting for a first round bye if watson diddnt drop the pass against the colts...

Josh, you make a good point about Samuel too. He got snubbed from the Pro Bowl roster and has made tons of big plays this season. He could be the second best corner in the NFL right now behind only Champ Bailey.

I touched on this subject a few weeks ago. The Pats are t their best when they are not the favorite going into the Super Bowl. I think they can be a dangerous team. They just need to take that show on the road again for the playoffs and prove they can do it outside of Foxboro.

Pats are 5-1 this season outside Foxboro and 5-3 at home. It almost seems like its the other way around this year.

Enjoy the feeling now, avoid expectations, the letdown won't be so bad. Unless you're in a time machine, you won't see the Pats in the Super Bowl this year.

NOT the Patriots. Pats fans and their myopic "Dynasty". Big Bad Dominating Patriots BARELY won each of their 3 Super Bowls. That's NOT a dynasty, nor a team to be feared. Tom Brady is the Joe DiMaggio of Boston - OVER overated. He's good, but it takes a whole team a whole month of playoffs to REACH the Super Bowl. The Colts for all their faults will beat the Patriots if they meet. The Chargers are having a "magic type" year that seems to be driven by destiny. The Ravens would beat the Pats. Hell, Mighty Vince Young and the Titties could beat the Pats this year. Face it, the "run" is OVER (actually over the day the Golden Leg left).

Getting Harrison back this week is huge for the Patriots. He is the most important player on their defense because of the physical presence he gives them. The Colts receivers don't like to get hit, especially Marvin Harrison. With Rodney in there they Colts receivers are afraid to go over the middle which takes away all of Peyton's little dinks and dunks. Everyone is bagging on the Patriots receivers this year, but other than Deion Branch who do they really miss. Are Givens and Patten still even in the league anymore? Troy Brown always has been Brady's number one receiver even if the numbes don't show it. Going all the way back to 2001 if Brady needs to make big play Troy Brown has always been the man. He is one of the most underrated players in the history of the league if you include his special teams and defensive play. Also, while they may not have a big name wide receiver, Ben Watson was a first round pick and has all the tools to be a top tight end for years to come. I really don't think Brady's old recievers were that much better than the current ones, he just made them look better than they were by spreading the ball around. Injuries are really the only thing that can stop the Patriots as far as I can see. Losing Junior Seau who was having a pro-bowl year was big, especially the way him and Bruschi seemed to be feeding off of one another. Wilfork needs to be healthy for the playoffs, because he is every bit as important to New England as Jamal Williams is in San Diego. Ultimately, the most important guy that they need healthy though is Maroney. Corey Dillon has lost about 12 steps in the last two years. When Maroney is on the field and running well the Patriots offense steps up to a whole another level.

Joe DiMaggio overrated? Now there's a comment which needs explanation. Otherwise I agree, the Pats barely won their Super Bowls, and two of the three were won by defense and special teams. In the context of today's parity in the NFL the Pats should be given their due, but they are far from a dynasty, and barely qualify as a good team.

DiMaggio's 1941 sham MVP over Ted Williams is enough justification for Manny's proclamation by itself.

And, continuing my ad hominem attacks on Joe DiMaggio, that "greatest living ballplayer" thing that he insisted on being called was absolutely absurd. Mays kicks DiMaggio's ass in every possible way. Williams, too. Mantle has more of a claim to it than the man he replaced. Ernie Banks -- better player, too. "Greatest living ballplayer" my ass...

By all accounts Dimaggio was overrated. If it wasn't for the fact that he played for the Yankees and the 56 game hitting streak he would be nothing more than just anoth Hall of Famer. It's just like Jeter today, sure he is good, but he wouldn't get nearly the press if he wasn't a Yankee. I know you are old, but by my calculations you weren't even born yet when Dimaggio retired so it's not like you ever saw him play.

I didn't hear anyone mentioning the Patriots in the Super Bowl after they lost 21-0 to Miami. Was a win over the Texans really good enough to change people's minds? The Chargers would absolutely beat the Patriots in the playoffs, especially at home.

Brady and the rest of the team always has problems against Miami. That was not the real Patriots you saw in that game. Once the playoffs roll around, they won't have games like that.

He just isn't on the same level as a Ruth, or Mays, or Aaron. In fact he isn't even the best all-time Yankee centerfielder as that distinction would go to Mantle. I find it funny that you are constantly commenting on the degrading the character of today's athletes, but when it comes to oldschool guys you are constantly standing up to defend the biggest asses. You know that I am not one to personally judge an athlete based on anything other than what they do on the field, but come on the greatest living ballplayer thing was absurd. I can almost see TO in 20 years demanding to be called the greatest living wide receiver.

Larry Johnson really did make the maximum contribution to the Kansas City Chiefs team. It is surprising that the Chiefs did so well with a backup quarterback. Right now the Kansas City Chiefs are selected to win the Super Bowl Poll. See for yourself: http://today...perbowl_poll
