Sunday Bloody Sunday

Sunday evening, 8th ranked North Carolina emerged victorious over the 14th ranked Duke, 86-72. The latest result of college basketball's nastiest rivalry left Duke with their largest margin of defeat all season and North Carolina's Tyler Hansbrough with blood streaming down his face. The injury came with 14.5 seconds left, when Hansbrough leaped for a layup. After the ball left his hand, he was struck in the face by Gerald Henderson's right elbow.

In a statement released after the game, the three officials ruled the foul, "as combative and confrontational and said such a foul is ruled a fight... By rule, it is an automatic ejection. By NCAA rule, (Henderson) must sit out the next game."

CBS analyst Billy Packer repeatedly said the foul was not flagrant on the air. After watching numerous replays, I think while Henderson might not have been targeting Hansbrough’s nose with his elbow, he was definitely going for much harder of a foul than necessary. Everyone is entitled their own view, but you have to wonder what he had in mind with his team down 14 and only 18 seconds to go in the game.

Do you think this was an intentional cheap shot?

Either way, it’s a good example of why it is important to keep your emotions in check at the end of a game that isn’t turning out the way you wanted to. One thing is for sure, the Duke vs. North Carolina rivalry just stepped up another notch.

I really don't think it looked intentional. Henderson went up into the air with an open hand, as if he was going to try to block a shot. Then the ball was swatted away from Hansbrough. It looked to me like Henderson was just bringing his arm back down and it whacked him. If you were going to hit a guy in the face, you wouldn't do it in the air like that. He was probably intending to foul Hansbrough, but only so he wouldn't have an easy layup. If the ball wasn't swatted away first, it would've just been a foul and nobody would've noticed.

That was an intentional shot by Henderson, and it was cheap. I have more of a problem with Coach K's reaction to it, or a lack of a reaction to it. Last year at this time, Coach K went on about how GMU Coach Jim Larinega was a saint and such a good man because he was willing to suspend his top player for a game in the NCAA tournament for a flagerant foul that wasnt even called. Coach K went on about how he hoped that he would have the guts to do such a thing. Well a year later we clearly see that Coach K does not have the guts to do that. He does not have the guts to put integrity in front of winning. Guess we should have known that though, he let Christian Lattener play after stomping a guy in the chest.

This just in: Billy Packer is a moron and Coach K will never be even half the man Jim Larranaga is. We now return you to your regularly-scheduled programming.

I thought it was absolutely intentional. He came running from the other side of the court to get in the mix of things, went up late, swung much harder and at a weird angle than he would've if he was truly trying to help his team gain possession of the ball. I think frustration got to Henderson a little bit and a cheap shot was the result. And I think he did a hell of a job trying to make it look like it was incidentally in the mix of things.

You are responsible for your actions. I believe his intent was to foul him hard. I don't think his intent was to hurt him the way he did. Nonetheless, whether you intended the result is different than whether you intended the action. He intended the action, and is therefore guilty as charged!
