Stop Yi

by user C.Bothe

Yesterday it was reported that the agents and representatives for Yi (You say E i say YEE) Jianlian have been talking to other teams about possible trades to "rescue" Yi from Milwaukee. Now isn't this tampering; how can you possibly talk to a player whose rights are owned by another team. Isn't this like the Sonics starting to talk to Kevin Garnett because he could be a free agent next year, and they may have cap room? The fact is that Yi should be forced to play for Milwaukee for the duration of his rookie contract and after that who cares what he does? What Yi is doing is a first for the NBA, however its not a first in pro sports. In the MLB you constantly see players refuse to sign because they don't get the right amount of money, that their agents tell them they are worth. Of course I'd probably feel like I was worth $ 5 mil, if I was drafted in the first round, even if it's doubtful I'll ever make the bigs. In the NFL we've had examples of this from John Elway to Eli Manning and some in between. Eli refused to go to the Chargers and got a trade to the Giants for Phillip Rivers, what turned out to be Shawne Merriman, Roman Oben, and Nate Kaeding. 3 Pro Bowlers for Eli, tell me does that look like a good trade to you?

As far as I can remember something like this has never happened in the NBA; and the NBA should take steps to stop it. If Yi doesn't want to play for the Bucks, the NBA should simply ban him; if he decides to go back to China that's fine Yi banned for 6 years won't hurt anyone; then when the ban ends he will still be the Bucks property. What if this had happened a year early and the NBA allowed Yi to basically pick where he went? Would Kevin Durant or Greg Oden said no to Portland and Seattle respectively; would KD have said no I want to win championships in 3 years so I'm going to play with Oden in Portland and refuse to show up to Seattle. You may be thinking well this can never really happen, but are you so sure; historically NBA players have been viewed as more selfish than any other league.

Hypothetically look at next years draft class, one of the top guys OJ Mayo is going to USC because of the marketability and Hollywood lifestyle that can bring him. What is there to say that he won't go anywhere but LA or New York? What about Derrick Rose, he grew up in Chicago, what would stop him from refusing to play for anyone but his home town team? Now hopefully none of this will ever happen, but if Yi sets the precedent and gets to pick which team he goes to; there is no telling which rookie will decide what team he plays for next.

Attention Foreign Players: Prove Yourself Before Demanding Anything Plus, the fact that he did not travel to Milwaukee to be formally introduced to the fans and has no aspirations to even step foot there is appalling.

Amen, Foreign players shuold not be treated any different than US guys. Unless they went undrafted some year they should not be allowed to sign free agent contracts even if they are like 33 years old. The draft is in place to help the worst team get the best available players and if they allow him to leave it will just undermind the process.

I'd not limit your rule to foreigners. It applies to all without NBA experience.

I'll take a Yi for KG trade anyday. Now tell me does that look like a good trade to you? F*ck yeah it does. Get that little whiner out of town. Better yet, trade him to an Eastern Conference team so Bogut and Villanueva can have their way with him.

You think Yi would play for Minnesota though? Fat chance.

Mainly, the point of the trade is not to worry about the needs of the player. If he refuses to play in Minnesota, oh well, it's not the Bucks' problem anymore. The point is to alleviate yourself of his and his representatives' bullshit and avoid having wasted the six pick in the draft.

That's true but why would Minnesota ever trade for Yi knowing full well they aren't going to be play him? The only way that trade would make sense is if a 3rd team was involved that Yi would be excited to play for.

Was the minus really necessary? Regardless of that though, why keep a cancer around? Sure, if he's really that desperate to play in the NBA he'll suck it up long enough to tank his way through the season and be traded. But why force someone to play when their play is detrimental to the team? It has been proven, year in and year out, that the best way to deal with a cancer is to rid yourself of him and pound the living shit out of him the first time you meet back up. How did the Eagles do against Dallas last year?

I didn't hand you the minus chief. And I would most certainly love to see Yi The Walking Twig get dominated by some NBA talent but we can't enjoy that if he's refusing to play can we?

My mistake, and I don't know if you're a Dane Cook fan at all, but the chief thing made me laugh. "I am not an Indian Chief, I am not the Chief of Police, I don't play for the Kansas City chiefs, and I'm not a chef, which is sometimes confused with chief on paper, I've done that, as you're writing it you're thinking, 'I'm dumb.'"

Who cares who he plays for next year, I just don't want to see them give in to his demand. Let him sit in China and prove himself against Wang, that makes you feel good as a person I can domiate 2nd graders but when I face guys that are my age or talent level I have to get my way or I won't play because they scare me.

Remember how well everyone thought Yao Ming was gonna do? Look what happened to him his first season. 13.5 points, 8.2 rebounds, 1.74 blocks/per game. For a guy that's 7'6", we all thought he was going to dominate, but he couldn't even get 10 rebounds a game? He was overrated that season. I have a feeling that Yi's ego is going to get to him if he plays next season and he'll end up with numbers the same as, if not worse, than Yao's first season...

That's because Chinese people aren't as aggresive as Americans. It's a culture thing. They think it would be low class or disrespectful to aggresively steal rebounds from other players and dunk on them. If he lived his childhood in America, he'd easily be the best center in the NBA right now.

As I said on another related article, this has been done before--Yao to Houston. Need a domestic example? Kobe Bean Bryant to the Lakers, 1996. I'm sure we could find others.

Dirk's name also came up on that other related article. He didn't refuse to go to the Bucks--it was a draft day deal all prearranged by Nellie.

Kobe never insisted on only playing in LA. He was almost taken by the Nets with the 8th pick that year, until he found out LA would make a trade for him if he fell to 13th, so he refused to do something with them, I want to say it was go to dinner and said don't pick me, I won't play. The Nets wussed out and thats their mistake.

I agree with your article but now it seems a matter of time before Yi gets traded to the Warriors for Wright and one or two other pieces/draft picks.

Regardless of how you view this Yi situation (I already expressed my flag waving 2 cents earlier), it will be very interesting to see the Stern Empire go up against Red China.

Eric Lindrois is a good example of a NHLer who refused to play in Quebec- he refused to be drafted there. He held strong. He doesn't like wine and cheese I guess. But I do agree- refusal to play on a team should hold serious consequences-- it's part of the life of being a pro athelte- take the good with the bad-

There's a TON of precedent here. The NBA will handle this fine. Fran Vazquez, for instance. John Elway, Bo Jackson, hell... This happens in baseball ALL the time! J.D. Drew anyone? Ever heard of Roger Clemens? He was drafted by the Mets but went to U Texas instead. In America you have freedom. Like freedom to NOT work for your employer. He DOESN'T have to sign the contract if he doesn't want to play... If he doesn't want to play there, he doesn't have to... something will get worked out.

True, thats why the draft picks just go to the highest bidder. Freedom to get the top pick every year because it would be unfair any other way. Oh wait this has nothing to do with freedom. He can pick who he works for after his rookie deal but to already become this kind of cancerous player to a team, hes already hurting his value a bit for 3 or 4 years down the line. Although some team will always take a chance, they always do.

Isn't Yi from China? Isn't China a communist country? Doesn't the US have a trade embargo with China? Wouldn't allowing an illegal immigrant to work in the US violate that sanction? We're being dictated where he will play by a communist government? Tell Yi to take his seven foot ass back to China and work the rice fields for $2 a day. Shitbag.

Please, Kelsdad.

Yi is a person, not a tradeable commodity. There are plenty of people who come from China to work or get an education in the United States.

He is not an illegal immigrant: he would have/does have a work visa.

There is no trade embargo between the US and China anyway. Check the label on the shirt you are wearing.

I still don't understand all the venom for Yi. This has been done before, many times, in each of the four major team sports.

The problem doesn't lie in Yi. It's in the people surrounding him, and the Chinese authority in particular. Remember, China is still a communist country, and people don't have the freedom to pick jobs.
