Still On Fire

Winning against the Houston Astros 11-3 last night puts the New York Mets in a comfortable spot in the National League East division.

Being able to come out and get a win after losing the last game was great.

Getting great production out of the line-up was the key to last night's win. When the Mets are playing their best, they have the best line-up in the National League.

In the first inning, the Houston Astros scored first. First basemen Lance Berkman homered to deep center field, which put the Astros up 1-0.

Houston Astros shortstop Mark Loretta was great in the third inning. He singled to center field, which lead Lance Berkman to score. That gave the Astros a 2-0 lead in the third inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Mets were able to come back. Mets third baseman David Wright doubled to deep right center field. Mets pitcher Mike Pelfrey was able to reach home plate. Second baseman Luis Castillo scored as well, because Astros center fielder Hunter Pence had a throwing error. That gave the Mets the lead 3-2.

The Mets produced again in the bottom of the fifth inning. Mets center fielder Carlos Beltran hit a home run to deep left field. Mets first baseman of the night Jeff Conine singled to right, and Met left fielder Moises Alou came in with the run. This made the score 5-2, Mets.

The bottom of the sixth, the Mets put the game away. Luis Castillo singled to right center field, and Mets shortstop Jose Reyes came in with the score. Moises Alou doubled to left field, and Luis Castillo was able to score. Mets catcher Paul Lo Duca hit a sacrifice fly to right field, and David Wright scored. Mets right fielder Lastings Milledge hit a three-run homer to deep left field, and that put the Mets up 11-2.

Astros third baseman Ty Wigginton doubled to deep left field, and right fielder Luke Scott scored. But the Houston Astros didn't get back on top, which finish the game 11-3.

This was great for the New York Mets, because they put a lot of pressure on the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Phillies are behind the Mets 5.5 games. Losing to the Florida Marlins 6-3 hurts the Phillies even more.

Losing to a non-playoff contending team hurts when you are fighting for the playoffs. Inconsistent, thats what the Phillies are suffering from.

The Mets are back together, and everyone is producing.

Lastings Milledge was clearly the best player last night. He went two for four, with a home run and three RBI's.

Carlos Beltran hit his 28th home run of the season, which helped his team out.

Jose Reyes is still going through a slump, he went one for five. But surprisingly, the Met line-up is still able to score runs.

Even though the Atlanta Braves won against the Washington Nationals 7-1, the Mets don't have to worry about them.

The Braves are seven games back of the lead in the National League East division, and it's going to be hard for them.

The Mets are going to face the Braves and Phillies again before the season is over. The way the Mets are playing recently, they will have the edge in those two series.

The only good thing is that the Mets are going to be one and done in the playoffs. An NL West team are going to make sure this statement becomes reality.

Sorry, Christof, have to disagree there. Bank it..NL Champs are the Mets. By far a better team than any of the other playoff contenders in the NL, especially those in the West. As with the Cardinals last season, anything can happen in the postseason, but that said, the only West team with a realistic shot of the Series is the Padres. The Dbacks bullpen will end up being their downfall in the postseason, as will the Dodgers lack of offense.

The Mets have the same issue that so many teams currently in the playoff race face: a lack of quality arms in the rotation. Outside of Glavine and Maine, who do you have? An on again, off again guy in Oliver Perez. An aging Orlando Hernandez, if he bounces back from the foot injury. A guy JUST back from major surgery in Pedro Martinez. A guy who was 0-7 and sent down until just recently in Pelfrey. You can't win every game 7-6. The Mets can burn out that bullpen in a hurry without quality starts.

Whose rotation do you trust? Aside from maybe the Padres (whose road ERA is sixth in the league, by the way, behind the Mets'), I don't think there's another rotation who I would say is significantly better than the Mets'. The NL is close enough that no team really has a much better shot than another to win a five-or-seven game series, but I think the MEts are as good as anybody.

Rotation wise, the two best full five man rotations in the NL belong to San Diego and Chicago. Those teams have quality depth through their entire staffs. Face it, in game four of a set, where you are facing elimination or going down 3-1, would you rather face Rich Hill, Greg Maddux/Justin Germano, or a guy like Hernandez?

I'd probably rather face Maddux with the Mets' lineup than face Hernandez with the Padres' lineup...

The Mets have talent, their pitching can be a problem. But they will be able to fix it. The Mets had the same problem last season.

The loss of Delgado is actually a blessing, in my opinion. I don't think he's been at 100% all season, it will give Conine some atbats, it will give Shawn Green some starts at first, all these things may be important in the postseason. You don't want to be experimenting with your lineup in October.

In the postseason, a pitching rotation is three starters, three and a half at best. Which means Perez pitches out of the pen. I don't recall if Martinez is eligible for the postseason, but if he is, can you imagine a close game in the seventh inning and Pedro coming into the game? No other team, in either league, has that option.

The Mets only real weakness is their bench, but with Beltran and Alou and Reyes and Wright, you don't need a bench unless their is an injury.

The bullpen is the problem in my eyes. The Mets line-up is great, and the bench is deep.

Phillies and Braves are running out of time to catch up with Mets. Just when Phillies got close they fell back again. Still think if anyone can do it the Phillies will be the team to catch them.
