Still No Relief in Milwaukee, Turnbow Out as Closer

The Associated Press story of Friday night's Milwaukee Brewers and Cincinnati Reds game reports that Brewers' manager Ned Yost plans to take struggling Derrick Turnbow out of the closer position indefinitely.

"He's really fighting himself," Yost said. "We'll give him a break."

Turnbow didn't object when told of Yost's plans.

"I feel confident, but I'm not making confident pitches," Turnbow said. "I've got to find it. They haven't talked to me about it. I'll understand. I don't want to cost the team games."

Turnbow (4-7) has not converted any of his last five save opportunities, including another on Friday night, and has seen his ERA balloon to 6.18 over that period.

The Brewers held ninth inning leads in both of their last two games only to see both leads slip away after Turnbow entered the game. On Friday with the Brewers up 5-3, Turnbow loaded the bases with one out before being pulled from the game. Left-hander Dana Eveland then walked in a run and gave up a game-winning single to Ken Griffey, Jr.

Although Turnbow did not technically blow the save, he was still credited with all three earned runs and the loss.

There was no mention in the story who the Brewers' interim closer would be, although former closer Dan Kolb, change up specialist Matt Wise, and fireballing youngster Jose Capellan, who was a closer in the minors, are all possibilities.

As disappointed as I am to see Turnbow gone from the closer role, the team is still in position to make a run and they can't afford to mess around with this sort of thing. I'm glad they made a move.

Wasn't he an All-Star?

Yeah, ironically enough it looks like the job is going to go to Dan Kolb, also an All-Star who also struggled the year after posting 40 saves for the Brewers. I see a trend (curse) developing.

Talk about a rapid ascent, followed by an equally quick descent.

Oh, how the mighty have fallen. He was a top-5 closer last year.
Incidentally, I think this move will give Milwaukee a good chance to get back into the driver's seat re: the NLWild Card. Of course, it depends greatly on who is given the save chances. My vote would be for Capellan.

It's happened before with closers - see Fransisco Cordero, and Kolb (who failed spectacularly with the Brewers last year), and Octavio Dotel (where is he?). Speaking of, I had to pick up Otsuka to replace Turnbow as my second fantasy closer.
