Stiles Tours the Sports Zodiac: Capricorn

by user Manny Stiles

Manny is late on the tour again. Guess what? I'm lazy. Continuing the tour of the zodiac to see which astrological sign is represented by the best athletes.

Miss a Stop on the Tour?

We're half way around the universe, starting at Cancer and progressing to this month's Capricorns...

Capricorn, tenth sign of the zodiac, "symbolized by a goat. Astrologers believe that people whose birthdays fall between December 22 and January 19 are born under the sun sign of Capricorn. The planet Saturn rules Capricorn, which is an earth sign.

According to astrologers, Capricorns have responsible, disciplined, practical, methodical, cautious, serious, and sometimes pessimistic natures. Capricorns believe that anything worth having is worth working hard for, and they assign the highest value to things won through the hardest work. Typical Capricorns are aloof and shy, sometimes even awkward, because they stay so focused on responsibility. To them life is serious business, and they sometimes have difficulty relaxing and having fun. Because of this, Capricorns may be lonely.

Capricorn is a goat, Ali was the G.O.A.T. but there are few "goats" on this list
Capricorn is a goat, Ali was the G.O.A.T. but there are few "goats" on this list

Astrologers believe that Capricorns respect power, authority, structure, tradition, and old things whose value and durability are tested by time. Capricorns are ambitious, and they typically are not satisfied unless they have reached a level of power and authority. They have a deep need for security, especially financial, and often will work very hard to get rich. Professions traditionally associated with Capricorn include banking; government, big business, and other situations with power hierarchies; mining; farming; and construction."

So who are the Sports Capricorns? Let's see... the list includes, but is not limited to the following:

Steve Carlton, Connie Mack, Brad Lidge, Steve Garvey, Ray Guy, Rickey Henderson, Nellie Fox, Pud Galvin, Paul Hornung, Dick Weber, Dan Devine, Ozzie Smith, Carlton Fisk, Ken Stabler, Larry Csonka, Bill "Spaceman" Lee, Richmond Sexson, Laffit Pincay Jr, A.J. Pierzynski, Sandy Koufax, King Kelly, Ted "Sam Malone" Danson, "Wrong Way" Jim Marshall, Hank Greenberg, David Cone, Doak Walker, Derrick Thomas, Hank Stram, Don Shula, Floyd Patterson, Chuck Noll, Jim Otto, Mercury Morris, Ron Kittle, Early Wynn, Ralph Branca, Lou Holtz, Francisco Rodriguez, Alfonso Soriano, Johnny Mize, Eric Gagne, Bruce Sutter, Jason Giambi, Tony Conigliaro, Bart Starr, Dick Enberg, Willie McCovey, Don Mossi, Dontrelle Willis, Ben Crenshaw, Albert Pujols, Dizzy Dean, Joe Frazier, Curt Flood, "Big Daddy" Don Garlits, Carl "Apollo Creed/Chubbs Peterson/Hurricane Smith" Weathers, Randy White, A.J. Foyt, Cus D'Amato, Jacques Plante, James Earl "Leon Carter" Jones, Don Zimmer, Muhammad Ali, Ted DiBiase, Dan Reeves and Minnesota Fats.

Ali (greatest of All time), Koufax (greatest lefty ever), Laffit Pincay Jr (greatest jockey ever -in terms of 'wins'), Rickey (he IS the greatest) and Connie Mack (greatest Manager ever/best wardrobe) Just missing out: Minnesota Fats (greatest billiards player), and Don Garlits (greatest top fuel drag racer)

Tony C., one of the great tragedies in sports history. A better player than Yaz. Freakin' shame.

Seriously, has there ever been a more overrated player than Rickey? Perfect example of a guy hanging on for five years just to pad his stats for the Hall. I think they should hang his plaque in the first floor mens room. Koufax isn't top five lefties. Ali rules, Smokin' Joe would have killed Mike Tyson.

Great list, and I am also a Capricorn, 12-24

Say what you want about Rickey-Rick, but he would still be playing MLB if he wasn't black-balled for SO manny (good) reasons... You can hate him, dislike him, be annoyed by him, want to wish him away, but he really was that good. Articulate? No. Able to comprehend the English Language and it's nuances? No. Getting on base and making things happen? Hell yes!

Dude was a baseball player and nothing else. But he was ALWAYS in shape (still is) and he ALWAYS liked to command alot of attention (Isn't that what you WANT in a leadoff man?) Henderson didn't hang on, he LOVES playing baseball -he was a lock after the MVP season, most HR's from leadoff/most 1st pitch HRs, the SB crown and multiple WS Rings.

You can't deny his greatness.

By the Way... I agree about Tony C. (Why doesn't Dickie Thon get the same love???) BUT, I think Yaz may be the MOST overrated player of all-time. A "Perfect example of a guy hanging on for five years just to pad his stats for the Hall" in my opinion... )

1st pitch homers? Leadoff homers? Big deal. Rickey stole bases ahead by 10 or down by 10..just so he could pad. Totally useless stat. Good eye at the plate, walked alot, got on base alot..these are important stats. But 80% of his SB's had no value.

and yet he scored more runs than anyone in the history of the game... how can THAT not be honorable?

Because he was on base 5000 some odd times, leading in runs is honorable for sure. But he would be the all-time runs leader if he stole 500 less bases too, and that's not honorable.
