by Manny Stiles

"Trivia" means you wont find the answers on a sortable stats webpage.

Ten not-so-easy questions that will rack your brain until you beg me to give you the answers... which I will give you by sometime Monday night.

Manny Stiles' Nearly Impossible Baseball Trivia!

Question #1- Above .500

We'll start off with an easy one - Everyone knows that the Yankees have the longest current streak of winning seasons (above .500) with 14 consecutive seasons. Which franchise is second?

  • Hint - it's not the Braves.

Answer: Boston Red Sox

(Answered by: Romiezzo)

Question #2 - Winning Early and Often

What MLB team has the best record during the first game of a series this season?

  • Hint - This team has spent time in first place of their division in each of the last two seasons.

Answer: Florida Marlins

(Answered By: Manny Stiles)

Question #3 - In a Pinch

What team leads the Majors in pinch hits (by a sizable margin)?

  • Hint - I'm not giving you a hint. That's a hint enough.

Answer: St. Louis Cardinals

(Answered By: False Prophet

Question #4 - Coming from Behind

Entering September, which three MLB teams have the highest percentage of their victories as come-from-behind victories? Hell, get ANY of them for partial credit.

  • Hint - none of them are currently above .500
ManRays is at it again - If it's not a batch of WTF, it's something VERY trivial!
ManRays is at it again - If it's not a batch of WTF, it's something VERY trivial!

Answer: Rangers, Marlins, Devil Rays (respectively)

(Answered by:Kelsdad, False Prophet, and User:Manny Stiles)

Question #5 - Decisions, Decisions

Friday night Tim Wakefield, for the first time all season did not get a decision in a game he started ending his streak at 26 consecutive starts with a decision from the begining of the season (the 6th longest such streak since 1957)

Who has the longest streak of decisions to start a season (since 1957) with 40!??!

  • Hint - He's in the Hall of Fame.

Answer: Gaylord Perry

(Answered by: Silencer76)

Question #6 - Hits!!!

Carl Crawford had two hits against the Yankees in the Tampa Bay Rays ass-whoopin' of the Yankees Friday night. That gave him 50 hits during the month of August; which made him only the 27th player in Major League history to perform the feat of 50 hits in a calendar month.

But another player had 53 hits in a month this season. Who is he?

  • Hint- He is NOT in MLB's top 53 in hits this season.

Answer: Chone Figgins

(Answered by: Silencer76)

Question #7 - Loyalty Makes for Great Trivia

Two active players have accumulated 2000 hits, 450 doubles, 250 HR and 1,000 RBI, all for the same franchise. Who are they?

  • Hint - The easy answer is Craig Biggio. Now get the other.

Answer: Garret Anderson

(Answered by: Romiezzo)

Question #8 - High Five

What player is often credited with the invention of (or at least the innovation and naming) the "high-five"?

  • Hint- He played in the 1977 World Series and was also the first MLB player to publically announce his homosexuality.

Answer: Glenn Burke

(Answered by: Silencer76)

Question #9 - Mashing Middle Infielders

Dan Uggla has hit at least 25 HR in each of his first two seasons while playing at least 100 gmes at Second Base.

Who did it first? (and actually did it for his first three seasons)

  • Hint - He isn't in the Hall of Fame

Answer: Joe Gordon

(Answered by: Romiezzo)

Question #10 - Start Looking It Up, Because You Don't Know The Answer

Who was the Russian born pitcher that was the first 300 game winner in Japanese Professional Baseball history? He had 251 more complete game starts than non-complete game starts - He died at age 40 while driving drunk into a train with 303 wins.

  • Hint - It's not Wally Yonamine (first American born player integrated in the Japan League in 1951, as well as first American in Japan Baseball Hall of Fame) because he was not Russian and NOT a pitcher!

Answer: Victor Starffin

(Answered by: Silencer76)

Extra Credit

It's an easy one - There's only ONE current manager in MLB that never played Minor League baseball. Who is he?

  • Hint - There are no hints on extra credit.

Answer: Dave Trembley

(Answered by: Silencer76)

Don't worry if you didn't get them all, you shouldn't

Sorry, if you heard some of these, I doubt you've heard them all.

If you did get them all, you need to go outside more...

  • Thanks for playing!

If you want all thirty teams, here they are:
  1. Yankees: 14
  2. Red Sox: 9
  3. A's: 8
  4. White Sox/Cardinals: 7
  5. Twins/Astros: 6
  6. Phillies: 4
  7. Angels/Mariners/Padres: 3
  8. Mets: 2
  9. Blue Jays/Tigers/Dodgers: 1
All the other teams had a winning percentage below .500 in 2006; therefore, they have 0 straight seasons with below .500 at this point.

Question #7: Craig Biggio is the first one with 665 doubles, 3,045 hits, 1171 RBIs, and 291 homers. The other one is a (probably surprising) Garret Anderson for the Angels. He has 457 doubles, 252 homers, 1186 RBIs, and 2175 hits.
  • Steve Finley is one double away from joining them by the way.

I knew Glenn Burke. (No not that way). He was in Double A in Waterbury, CT. Was on the same team with Pedro Guerrero and Rick Sutcliffe. (Sutcliffe's nickname was "Princess," let the speculation begin).

Burke was a funny guy, practical joker, always laughing and goofing off. Would do anything to win a game, hard nosed player, probably so due to a lack of star power talent. His teammates likely knew he was gay, but protected him from the outside thru clubhouse confidentiality. He had problems still, and eventually quit the game before his sexuality became public knowledge, and before he had a nervous breakdown.

Sad story, he died quite awhile ago of AIDS related issues.

He was also a homeless needle drug user for a while, so there are other ways to get AIDS, Romi... He died in 1995, the second MLB player to succumb of AIDS (Alan Wiggins was first)

Burke was very good friends with Tommy Lasorda Jr, who was estranged by his father after coming out. The Dodgers tried to set him up in a phony marriage for publicity reasons and he refused, so they traded him to Oakland. Then newly hired manager Billy Martin blatently refused to play him. That was the end of Burke.

Keep in mind that he was an amazing athlete. He was a legendary High School athlete that scouts once tabbed as "the next Willie Mays". He was a basketball standout who said his only regret was that he didn't play Pro Basketball too.

He ended his MLB with 2 career HRs and .237 career average.

    Texas, Florida, then Tampa Bay.

If you think about it, it makes sense. Teams with less wins have a better opportunity to make their wins comeback style than good teams who blowout bad teams...

So you miscreants and reprobates have all the answers except for the one I thought was the easiest to deduce... #3 go figure! Hint - the right answer was mentioned SEVERAL times, but never in the correct manner - name the team (they were mentioned a bunch of other times as wrong answers to other questions), not the manager/King of substitutions!

White Sox, Diamondbacks, Indians, Giants, and Royals are not the answer to number 3. I'm gonna go with the New York Mets.

I already stated that they were 2nd...

Someone got VERY close by naming the manager from the hint but not the team from the question!

    It's the CARDINALS!

Come on!! Captain Substitution, Tony LaRussa puts more pinch hitters and one batter relievers in the game than any three managers in the game's history combined!

I bet his team has led the league more than a few times in this unsortable category...

Kudos to Silencer for giving me a reason to ramp up the next round to "Even MORE Nearly Impossible".

Thanks for playing, I hope you all learned something that will never, ever, ever, ever be useful for anything! Although I hope even more than at least ONE of you can swindle a beer from some unsuspecting fool with these tidbits, because they aren't getting you laid, that's for sure!

I'm bouncing out for the day, Peace and good tidings!
