Stiles' Even MORE Nearly Impossible Trivia (Sept 2, 2007)

16
Vote

by Manny Stiles

Since it's apparently Trivia Week on the Armchair Channel, and you guys all think you're hot stuff for slapping a couple words together on google and hitting the GO! button, I'm gonna make this a little tougher...

The first round of questions were too hard I thought at first, but then I was proven wrong so I have to step it up a bit...

All of the statistics listed are as of Sunday morning.

ManRays is at it again - If it's not a batch of Nearly Impossible Trivia, it's Even MORE Nearly Impossible Trivia!
ManRays is at it again - If it's not a batch of Nearly Impossible Trivia, it's Even MORE Nearly Impossible Trivia!

Stiles' Even MORE Nearly Impossible Trivia

#1 - For Starters

Which MLB team has the most innings pitched by their starters so far this season?

  • Hint - Innings pitched in relief by a starter does not count towards this statistic.

Answer: Cleveland Indians (Answered by Kwitt11

#2 - No World Series for You!

The Baseball gods are funny sometimes... The player who played the most games all-time without appearing in a World Series is Rafael Palmeiro.

Who are the 2 active leaders?

  • Hint - It's not Barry Bonds (active leader in games played without WINNING a World Series)

Answer: Sammy Sosa and Ken Griffey Jr. (Answered by: User:Romiezzo and Kwitt11

#3 - Allergic to the DL

Since 1997, I have played more games than any other MLBer. Who am I?

  • Hint - It's not Rocco Baldelli.

Answer: Andruw Jones (Answered by:Kwitt11

#4 - Get it Straight

Grady Sizemore has the longest active streak of games played at 330, but has not started all of those games. Who has the longest streak of games started, going for his 301st game started today?

  • Hint - it's not Cal Ripken Jr.

Answer: Jeff Francoeur (Answered by Romiezzo)

#5 - Sir Wins-a-Lot

Since the begining of the 2002 season, which two MLB pitchers are tied for second in wins?

  • Hint - Neither of them are Roy Oswalt. He's first with 98!

Answer: Roy Halladay and Derek Lowe (Answered by Brendan.Canney

#6 - The Rookie is GOOD

If you don't know how much I love Delmon Young (A LOT), now you do. If DY gets a hit today he will extend his 9 game hitting streak to double digits, his FIFTH hitting streak of 10+ games this season!

WHO is the only other rookie in the last 50 years to have FIVE 10+ game hitting streaks in a season?

  • Hint - Unlike Delmon, he was not a #1 overall draft choice.

Answer: Ichiro Suzuki (Answered by Romiezzo

#7 - More Rays Triviality

Carlos Pena hit 2 HR on Friday in back-to-back innings against the Yankees, he was the second visitor to do that feat in Yankee Stadium this decade. Who was the last visiting player to hit HR in consecutive innings at Yankee stadium?

Answers: Jose Cruz Jr. OR Jose Hernandez (Answers by: Romiezzo and Tmil42

  • Hint - The player was a one-time Ray player, but did not perform the feat as a member of the Rays.

#8 - Extra Extra Bases

This one surpirsed me, because you'd think it would happen more often. 13 players in MLB history have hit 4 XBH in a game TWICE in one season. Only ONE player had two 4 XBH games in the same month of the same season. Who is he?

  • Hint - It's not Neifi Perez.

Answer: Aaron Rowand (Answered by Kwitt11

#9 - See You In September

At .341 which active MLB player has the highest career September batting average? (min 300 PA)

  • Hint- Albert Pujols is second at .336 and Juan Pierre???? is third at .335. So it's neither of those two.

Answer: Todd Helton (Answered by: Kwitt11

#10 - Different Name, Sounds the Same

What year was the only time a MLB All-Star game had two homonymally named players (spelled differently but sounds exactly the same).

Name the year and players.

  • Hint - obviously they weren't spelled the same, so spelling counts.

Answer: (1990) Greg and Gregg Olson (Answered by Romiezzo)

Extra Credit - Break-ing Out

Who has the NL's highest batting average since the all-star break at .425?

  • Hint - He has ZERO HR since the All-Star break.

Answer: Norris Hopper (Answered by: Kwitt11

There you, go!

Some are easy (if you work for Elias Sports Bureau or hang out with Jayson Stark every day (If I used any of his useless trivia, it was completely coincidental) and others will be very tough to find using a search engine...

If these aren't hard enough, it will be tougher... WAAAAAY tougher!

Good luck, and happy answer hunting!

I've come up with a list. I know it's not Ozzie Guillen, so that makes it 4 of about 50 former Devil Rays eliminated. :P (No Ozzie, McGriff, Vaughn or Boggs) Julio Franco... Randy Winn... JOSE CANSECO!! It's gotta be him. Please say that it's correct.

And it's not Aubrey Huff.

Baldelli played more than one season with the Rays (even though if you add them up they equal one season)

All kidding aside, I LIKE Rocco Baldelli alot. He's a good dude, seems very intelligent and thoughtful in person and deserves better than the plague of a career he has endured so far.

At least I can say I saw him go yard in person... (he has been rehabbing and is due to come back very soon - if not delayed for the 18th time this season)

Who has a very Mendozaish .215 average in Games 6 and 7 in playoff series' for the Yankees yet still routinely get's called "clutch"

or what is Mr. November's lifetime November batting average?

Who is the crappiest shortstop ever to win a Gold Glove?

Who beat out the amazing James Baldwin for Rookie of the Year in 1996?

OK...

Derek Jeter is the only active player and second Yankee player to have 12 straight seasons with 150 or more hits. Lou Gehrig holds the record with 13. Of course, over that span Gehrig had 280 more HR, exactly 1,000 more RBI, 2 more MVPs and 2 more WS rings... Oh, and .228 higher OPS (all while batting AFTER Babe Ruth).

How many RBI did Jeter have during his Mr November Series? Answer - ONE, the "Mr November" HR, that's IT! It was also his ONLY XBH of the series.

Who is MLB's All-Time Postseason strikeout leader? Derek Jeter.

Derek is SECOND all time in highest season avg by a player named 'Jeter' to Johnny Jeter's .353 in 1974.

In the infamous "flip" game, what did Jeter do at the plate?

Derek Jeter is the ONLY Yankees captain in their history to be Oh-fer the World Series after being named captain - named in 2003, they are 0-1 since (Mattingly never lost a W.S.!)

Of the 20 active MLB players with 2000 or more hits, only Johnny Damon, Omar Vizquel, Kenny Lofton and Craig Biggio have lower SLG than Jeter... Woo.

Bill James said this about which player "Giving him every possible break on the unknowns, he is still going to emerge as a below average defensive shortstop."? Answer - Jeter

Which all-time player does Jeter compare most closely to according to Similarity Scores? Ray Durham.

Derek Jeter had the longest streak to start a career without hitting a Grand Slam of all active players who have hit a Grand Slam - over 10 years, and it is still his only one.

Of ALL one of the players in MLB with a higher salary this season, he has over three hundred less Home Runs than him. (34 less this season alone)

He is the only player with two game winning groundout fielder's choice RBI this season.

Jeter is NOT in the top 10 for Yankees all-time OBP.

He looks like the Rock had sex with a muppet.
