Stamkos was the 1st overall pick of the Sarnia Sting in the 2006 OHL Entry Draft, previously playing for the Markham Waxers of the OMHA. Stamkos won a gold medal at the 2008 World Junior Championships with Team Canada. He was drafted 1st overall by the Tampa Bay Lightning in the 2008 NHL Entry Draft on June 20, 2008. Prior to being drafted, a website created by the Lightning was put up to create buzz around him (http://www.seenstamkos.com/).
