[edit] Biography
Steven Orr Spurrier may best be known for his illustrious college coaching career than his years playing, although he won the Heisman Trophy in 1966. He played 10 season in the NFL before retiring in 1976.
After retiring, he returned to his alma mater at Florida to become the quarterbacks coach. He moved on to Duke and then Georgia Tech as an assistant coach before taking his first head coaching job in 1983 with the Tampa Bay Bandits of the fledgling United States Football League.
In 1987, Spurrier took the head coaching job at Duke, where he took the Blue Devils to an ACC Championship in 1989. He was named ACC Coach of the Year in 1988 and 1989.
On December 31, 1989, Spurrier became the head coach of the Florida Gators. The Gators won the SEC title in his first year, although it was not observed by the conference because the team was on probation, and their first official title in 1991.
Spurrier guided the Gators to their first ever undisputed National Championship in 1996 after a 52-20 defeat of rival Florida State in the Sugar Bowl.
During Spurrier's tenure at the school (1990-2001), the Gators won six SEC titles and the one National Championship. He was named SEC Coach of the Year three times. He became the first person to have ever won the Heisman Trophy and coach a player that also won it (Danny Wuerffel, 1996). The team averaged 10 wins per season.
He is also credited with nicknaming Florida's Ben Hill Griffin Stadium "The Swamp."
In 2001, Spurrier left Florida to become the head coach of the NFL's Washington Redskins and became a huge flop in the NFL coaching ranks. The Redskins struggled mightily under "The Ol' Ball Coach" and Spurrier became target of heavy criticism, especially after his 5-year, $25 million contract became the largest coaching contract ever. In 2003, Spurrier resigned from the Redskins and also pulled his name out of consideration to return to Florida.
On November 23, 2004, Spurrier returned to college football as the new head coach of the South Carolina Gamecocks, replacing friend and coaching legend Lou Holtz, who had retired the day before.
The 2005 Gamecocks were not expected to do anything in the SEC, having struggled under Holtz. But the experts underestimated Spurrier and the Gamecocks, who went 7-4 on the season, including wins over Tennessee--the team's first ever in Knoxville--and then-12th ranked Florida. He was named SEC Coach of the Year for the fourth time in his career. The Gamecocks were invited to the Independence Bowl but lost to Missouri, 38-31.
Most people believe that 1972 was Steve Spurrier's best year, as he tossed 18 TDs.
