Steve Owens (Steve Everett Owens) was born on December 9, 1947 in Gore, Oklahoma. After going to high school at Miami (OK), Owens attended the University of Oklahoma. Owens made his professional debut in the NFL in 1970 with the Detroit Lions. He played for the Detroit Lions for his entire 5 year career.

Most people believe that 1971 was Steve Owens's best year, as he ran for 1035 yards and ran in 8 TDs.

Owens became the second Oklahoma Sooner to win the Heisman Trophy when he did it in 1969. He also later became the first Detroit Lion to rush for over 1,000 yards in a season.

He appeared in two Pro Bowls in his five-year career, but a series of knee injuries forced him to retire after the 1974 season.
