[edit] Biography

Steve Brodie (Walter Scott Brodie) was born on September 11, 1868 in Warrenton, Virginia. He made his Major League debut on April 21, 1890 for the Boston Beaneaters. In 1890, his rookie year, he hit .296 with 0 home runs and 67 RBI. Brodie played for the Boston Beaneaters, St. Louis Perfectos, Baltimore Orioles, Pittsburgh Pirates and New York Giants over the course of his 12 year career.

Walter Scott Brodie started his career in Boston, with the team that would eventually become the Atlanta Braves, and was a the time called the Boston Beaneaters. He played for the Boston Beaneaters of the National League from 1890 until 1891, before having his contract purchased by the St. Louis Browns also of the National League. He played for the Browns (the club that would become the Cardinals of St. Louis in 1900) for two years (1892-1893) before being traded (with Jim Donnelly, for Jake Stenzel, Tim O'Brien, Harry Truby, and Elmer Horton) in 1896 to the Baltimore Orioles. He played for the Orioles from 1893 until 1896, and then rejoined the club in 1898 and played with them until 1899. This Balitmore Orioles organization is not to be confused with the many many other similarly named clubs. This particular organization played in the National League and its entire existence lasted from 1882-1899). When the Between stints with the Orioles, Brodie played with the Pittsburgh Pirates of the National League (1897-1898; started as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1882-1890). When the the club folded, he stayed in town and played for a different Baltimore Orioles (this time of the American League) for just the 1901 season. This Baltimore Orioles franchise would go on to win 26 World Championships and make 45 playoff appearances (along with winning 39 Pennants). Those championships, though, would not occur in Baltimore, for the team lasted only two years in Balitmore before moving to New York to become the Highlanders (1903-1912), and then the Yankees. Getting back to Brodie: he played one last season in his 33rd year of life. His last year, 1902, was with the New York Giants of the National League (which became the San Francisco Giants in 1959; franchise started off as the New York Gothams in 1883).

Most people believe that Steve Brodie's best season was 1894, when he stole 42 bases, hit for a .366 average and knocked in 113 runs.
