Steroids Are Not the Worst Problem For Baseball

Hi Fans,

Steroids are not MLB's biggest problem.

It's the team owners that keep raising the salaries for players, who when I was a kid, would have been sent down to AAA or maybe even AA. Today's papers report Carlos Silva and the Mariners did a four year $48 million dollar deal. He was 13-14 & a 4.19 ERA for the Twins last season. The Tigers quickly inked their new pitcher, Dontrelle Willis to a 3 year $21.5 million contract. His last year's stats were 10-15 w/ a 5.17 ERA! How can MLB owners keep paying these incredible salaries for what are mediocre pitching statistics? The answer is raising ticket prices 20 percent as many MLB teams have announced for 2008. Can you imagine what Bob Gibson or Sandy Koufax would have earned in today's market? The owners have so much money coming in via TV and their very strong Internet component that they can lavish these HUGH amounts of money on mediocre players. Yes, they're Major Leaguers, but to reinforce average or below average stats with these tremendous amounts of money means the only people who lose in this arrangement is you and me - the baseball fans who have to pay $100 for a field box seat and $10 bucks for a warm flat beer. If you have answer to this inane pay structure, please let me know.

Merry Christmas.

It sucks that it's so expensive to go to a baseball game. But everyone still pays. Fenway Park, the league's oldest, smallest and most expensive (ticket-wise) venue, has sold out every game for years. But I think it sucks even more that the integrity of the game has been sacrificed.

It's a shame, I haven't been to a Fenway game in a few years, just because to get good seats the prices are so ridiculous. Add that onto the tank and a half of gas I need to get from where I live in New HAmpshire and back, it just isn't worth it. I love watching on TV, but it's nothing like being there.

Ahhhh the average baseball fan's paradox that involves demanding owners to overspend for on the field talent versus forking over more dough to buy game tickets.

Steroids are NOT the worst problem in baseball. However, neither is escalating salaries that could rival some countries GNPs.

The worst problem that has plagued baseball?

Easy. Hands down, it is Rally Monkey.

The insanity must stop.

My theory on salaries is : If they're willing to pay it you're worth it.It's not the owners fault, it's the fans.If they stop paying the ridicules prices they would have to go down.Supply & demand, simple economics.

If only I could resist seeing Jacoby Ellsbury in the flesh from hundreds of feet away...and actually watching baseball.

Agreed Frugolf. I have boycotted the Pirates for two years now. I like baseball, but if the owners won't put a product on the field, I will just watch it on TV.

Well wait a minute there. You boycott the Pirates because "they won't put a product on the field".

So let's say, the team commits to increasing its annual payroll by, I dunno $150 million.

Are you now gonna pay more for that same ticket?

Just asking.

I don't expect $150M. You figure, I pay $55 per ticket of the Steelers, and $35 for Pens tickets, but I can get a Buccos ticket for less than $20 off a scalper outside the stadium. So, yes. I would be willing to pay more for a good team.

My biggest problem with the outrageous salaries is that they price my team out of the market.

Yeah but did you ever consider that because you choose not to buy a ticket that the team's war chest is that much less?

I filled their war chest for over a decade of loosing. They didn't reinvest in the team and now I refuse to give more money.
