Steroids...Who should be in the Hall of Fame?

by user UCBearcats1125

Almost a year ago, five Major League Baseball players appeared in front of the House Government Reform Committee to talk about to testify on performance-enhancing drugs. It appears that four of the five players will not be on a major league roster this year. Mark McGwire and Jose Canseco retired after the 2001 season. Sammy Sosa rejected a deal by the Washington Nationals this past month and his agents say he is ready to retire. Rafael Palmeiro will likely not see his name on a roster once early April rolls around after testing positive for the 'roids after denying accusations by the media and lying in front of Congress. Curtis Montague Schilling is the only player to testify infront of Congress that is still in the game.

Obviously Palmerio was caught, but Sosa and McGwire never were. Both Sammy and the "Mac Attack" were actually small when they both started their young major league careers. Something had to happen to gain that much muscle mass. McGwire's arms were bigger than most people's heads. A bit of an exaggeration but it truly is not far off. So since they were never caught redhanded do they deserve to be in the hall of fame of not?

So I ask you, which of these players should and should not be in the Hall of Fame?

My Scorecard

Mark McGwire - YES

<stats> Player=Mark McGwire Type=Batting </stats>

Sammy Sosa - YES

<stats> Player=Sammy Sosa Type=Batting </stats>

Jose Canseco - NO

<stats> Player=Jose Canseco Type=Batting </stats>

Rafael Palmeiro - NO

<stats> Player=Rafael Palmeiro Type=Batting </stats>

Curt Schilling - YES

<stats> Player=Curt Schilling Type=Pitching </stats>

I believe you are innocent until proven guilty even though Sammy and Mac did something to bend the rules.

Sammy corked his bat and did nothing before he did steriods. He doesn't deserve to be in the hall. Plus he did those silly Pepsi commercials.

True but why would he be at the Committee Hearing?

I would vote in mcguire and bonds. However, I would not vote them in on the first ballot. This were hall of fame players even before the juice and would have gotten in anyway.

No vote for Sosa though because I beleive he was not going to be anywhere close to the Hall without his steroided numbers.

I would not vote-in palmeiro because he was not a dominant player in his era. He was very good, but I don't beleive 'consistantly good' is good enough to make the Hall. The Hall should be reserved for all-time great dominant players.

Canseco on the other hand was dominant, but not for long and he was a complete Roid Head.

No vote for schilling either. He was only dominant for about 5 years and hasn't accumulated huge numbers over the span of his career.

http://www.a...rt_Schilling is his opening statement. It's clear he isn't there because he was accused, but rather as a favorable witness.

Schilling isn't good enough for the hall, unless he keep it up for a couple more wins and finishes up with 250 W.

for a good 10 years schilling was like aj burnett is now. great stuff, pretty good results. once schilling left philly, he became on a monster. hopefully burnett will follow the same path.

I agree on the no votes for Sosa. The guy was nothing before steroids, and he was always dreadful in the field, no matter how much people tried to pretend like his fielding improved. Not to mention that you always have to wonder how many homeruns he'd have hit if he wasn't playing in itty bitty Wrigley all those years. As for McGwire not getting busted, he's already admitted to using performance enhancers that were not banned by baseball. The stuff he was caught using was not illegal, and at that time, baseball had only banned substances that were illegal. It was the same law that banned marijuana and amphetamines. It's possible McGwire DID do other stuff that was illegal, I'd say even likely. I just wanted to point out that it's not entirely true to say he was never caught. We know at least one thing he was doing, but unlike the others, he wasn't breaking the rules.

I forget where I read it but I agree with I think the Sports Guy, in that these guys should get into the Hall but the allegations or uncoverings should absolutely be mentioned on their plaque.

Rose should be banned from everything, but so should anyone *proven* to have used steroids. Breaking the rules is breaking the rules.

You can't keep someone out based on allegations. Unless you have some sort of actual evidence (which isn't just an idea or opinion), you can't tarnish a player's career.

So far, McGwire and Bonds should not be discriminated against...not until one or both admit guilt or are found guilty through due process, not public opinion. Personally, I firmly believe Bonds is a cheater and I despise all the media whoring he does. I want him to disappear, but he still has numbers worthy of the Hall. Sosa doesn't deserve the hall, neither does Canseco. Palmerio has awesome career stats, but he should be punished for being caught.

Schilling is not a HOF pitcher. He doesn't even have 200 wins yet, nor has be been 'dominant'.

Rose deserves to be in the Hall, but you can't put him in and leave Raffy out....great numbers, both broke serious rules.
