Stern is a Joke

by Ibearg

David Stern, once arguably the most powerful commissioner in sports, has become an absolute joke. Nearly everything he has done in the past few years has been poorly handled. From the dress code, to the new ball, to the Spurs-Suns suspensions last years they were all poorly handled. Now I'm not sure his decisions in any of these cases was completely wrong, a dress code isn't an awful idea, neither is a new ball and a rule is a rule. However, getting buy in from the players would have smoothed the process in the first two and simply understanding why people would argue the Suns players shouldn't have been suspended would have made it seem more reasonable that he did it anyway.

All that being said his decision to not punish Isiah Thomas and the Knicks is an absolute joke. Image if this was Stephon Marbury who had been sued for sexual harassment not the coach. If he had gone through this process and settled only after an embarrassing trial which he lost, is there any doubt Marbury would face a fine or suspension? What message does that send about sexual harassment in general?

You could argue he didn't punish them because they agreed to settle the thing. I'd buy that if they'd settled it before the trial, but they didn't. They took it this far and Stern urged them to settle now, which was clearly in their best interest anyway, so that's no excuse for not being punished. You could also ague the 11.5 million dollars was enough of a punishment, but again a player who might go to jail still gets penalized games and pay.

Stern needed to take action, and his not taking any is a sad addition to his quickly tarnishing legacy.

Isn't coaching the Knicks punishment enough for Isiah Thomas?  :)

What is Stern going to do. Thomas and the case went to settlement not verdict. Thats a big difference right there.

Innocent people usually don't settle...especially for £11.5 million. If his actions brought the game/team into disrepute, he should be fined by his club and the league to boot. But maybe managing the Knicks is punishment enough.

and i disagree about innocent people settling...

i'm not absolving isiah...i'm sure things happened (and i haven't followed the case terribly closely, at all), but settling to me suggests that

A) they got him for doing something he shouldn't be

B) Ms. Brown wasn't simply a big ass being grabbed...

C) Rather than either lose 20 mil or Brown get nothing, they both thought it was in their collective best interests to settle and move on...

Also, to bring it down, what would happen in any company where a high level exec did this? Seriously...they woundn't fine him...

Agreed Just. (damn youre on a role today) Plenty of people settle rather than going through a drawn out court procedure. The PR image hit had already taken place once he charges are filed. Nonetheless, Stern has no authority to declare someone innocent or guilty. You cannot be clean in the court of law and then guilty in the court of STern.

it really doesn't have much to do with the NBA...

i mean....what about Kobe and the rape trial...right or wrong, innocent or guilty...the NBA, in all fairness, did not punish him...it had nothing to do with his basketball actions

on that note....kobe's wikipedia page says he's from Philly....that's bullshit

I still think in a case of sexual harassment many people--if they were in factinnocent--wouldn't settle. Granted, I'm not a rich man and my reputation means a lot more to me than the time I would have to spend to disprove the accusations. But yes, there are many good reasons for rich people to settle more petty cases....their lawyers will cost more than the payout, they just can't be bothered to miss their tee time...I'm sure there's more....but I'm just too damn lazy. :)

Once you are brought up on charges of sexual harrasment, the damage is already done. Sexual harrasment is one of htose charges that are nearly impossible to beat because it is a "he said, she said" The longer the trail is drawn out and drags the more the name of both parties are thrown through the mud. It is best to get it over with and out the way as fast as possible, guilty or not.

David Stern I believe is the mastermind of most of these referee scams going on. He cannot be touched, he bended the rules a little bit so NBA referees could gamble. This is fishy stuff. As for the Knicks......maybe they need to go to OK City.

The NBA would never allow one of their marquee franchises leave its home city. The Knicks may be Godawful but they are still one of the most profitable and on eof the key teams in the league. Why do you think we still talk to thim.

Regardless of whether or not David Stern did anything in punishing the Knicks, I feel that all this crap boils down to the owner, Jim Dolan. Even though the Rangers are doing much better in a parallel universe we call the NHL, Cablevision has run the Garden into the ground. The Knicks are embarassing. I admit that I haven't watched their games as much as I used to and a lot of that has to do with my dissatisfaction with the ownership to the basketball operations to the players themselves. Simply put, I'm disenchanted with the franchise. At least the Suns are keeping me happier, but other than that, I don't watch the NBA like I once did. It used to be #1 when I was in grade school. Now it is hockey despite its shortcomings. I wish Isiah would be fired, for Stephon Marbury to be sent packing and the Dolans to sell MSG, its teams and related sports properties already!

Keep in mind that the NY Knicks are a NBA FRANCHISE. I'm not an expert on NBA policies and codes of conduct, but it seems responsible for the league to at least consider suspending/fining a team official after being found guilty of sexual harassment in a civil court of law.

The key to what you just said was a Civil court of law. a civil suit. NBA players and teams go to court consistantly for civil cases. It is outside of the NBA's realm to judge.

Does anyone feel other than me that David Stern has too much of a vested interest in the New York Knicks? Here was the perfect chance for David Stern to rescue his now defunct campaign of turning the NBA into a model league and he lets it slip thru the cracks. David Stern continues to be inconsistent and that makes him as well as his "policies", null and void. Just ask the NBA officials who were let off the hook despite the fact they gambled. He is full of BS.

I see the biggest problem with Stern is he is afraid of his job. It looked when he first took office that he had the guts to really do something but alas, like so many before he took a huge dive. At times it seems he is looking over his shoulder, at who, nobody knows but Mr. Stern. What the NBA needs is the owners to hire someone who isn't afraid of getting his hands dirty and really hit some asses about all the problems in the NBA. From drugs to image to rules and refs. So many things are not happening in the NBA that it isn't funny anymore. You watch some of the games and calls are so wrong, refs out of place and most of the time the wrong ref calls a play that he can't really see well and gets it wrong more often then not. If it is time for Stern to go then he had better do it with some sense of class because of to now that is a word that can't be applied to the head of the NBA.
