Stephen A Smith Hates ArmchairGM

54
Vote

by Tyrone Briggs

Stephen A. Smith seems worried that one of you might just take his job away.

Rather than go off on a tirade against this idiot (I'm currently waging war against Jay Mariotti involving Mark Cuban, more on that later...), I have elected to allow Smith hang himself on his own spew :

"And when you look at the internet business, what’s dangerous about it is that people who are clearly unqualified get to disseminate their piece to the masses. I respect the journalism industry, and the fact of the matter is ...someone with no training should not be allowed to have any kind of format whatsoever to disseminate to the masses to the level which they can. They are not trained. Not experts. More important are the level of ethics and integrity that comes along with the quote-unqoute profession hasn’t been firmly established and entrenched in the minds of those who’ve been given that license.
"Therefore, there’s a total disregard, a level of wrecklessness that ends up being a domino effect. And the people who suffer are the common viewers out there and, more importantly, those in the industry who haven’t been fortunate to get a radio or television deal and only rely on the written word. And now they’ve been sabotaged. Not because of me. Or like me. But because of the industry or the world has allowed the average joe to resemble a professional without any credentials whatsoever."

Evidently, Smith is not a big fan of the American Constitution and especially hates that annoying little bit about freedom of speech. This is rather significant rant from a public figure against bloggers and the right to disseminate information.

This is an attack against you.

Feel free to vent here.

Man, that quote also shoots down all print journalists, established or not. He basically is saying radio and tv is the real deal, and print is nothing. Although I'll say newspapers and magazines have taken a substantial hit from the internet and tv circuits, I just think print is going through a transition period.

On top of that, I don't think all that many people on here pretend to be experts. I feel a majority of articles are opinion based, and if backed by fact, are often discussed and disputed in a way that his television and radio censors would never allow.

So, F Stephen A. Smith and his B.S. statements.

On a final note, there are thousands of television journalists out there. Your market is flooded and your presence is meaningless. I worked in radio for 5 years, television for one and print for two. All of you hosts are the same. The one commonality between on-air hosts, whether radio or television is this - who did you F over to get there?

Smith is off base to an extent, but it is true that there is a lot of awful blogger commentary that is getting exposure on the net. When you look at EPSN.com and FoxSports.com they feature some articles from their blog sections that are just awful, looking like the author doesn't understand the sport they are writing about, let alone have an understanding of the English language.

This post also neglects the question and the first paragraph of his response:

"==On if he considers going back to newspapers, or whether it's a dying industry:

"I don't believe that. All the newspaper industry has to do is connect itself better with the internet and guess what? People will read the newspaper on the internet, not rely so much on the paper copy and get with the internet age more so than it has. The foundation of the newspaper business... should never die. We should do all we can possible to make sure it lives in perpetuity because it’s extremely important with everything. It keeps radio and television on their ps and qs."

Smith basically says two things in regards to the internet and sports blogging...

1. The newspaper industry was stupid for not being proactive and getting involved with the internet. If they want to survive, newspapers have to create more online content. 2. There are a lot of awful internet sports writers. For the most part, I believe ArmchairGm has a great group of writers, but there are some other larger sites that are just painful to read.

These are two things that all of us, and Stephen A. Smith, can agree upon.

I agree with both of your statements. I really feel print journalism missed the boat when it came to transitioning. Even a local paper by me has developed into a social networking news site in hopes that people will treat the newspaper more like a myspace or facebook than just a place to go for the occasional news story.

Thanks for posting this - it really shows what a paranoid ass Smith has become.

I imagine that plenty of paid journalists are a little scared and paranoid about the internet and blogger community of sports writers. Much of what is found on this site is more interesting and better written than on the professional ones. That does not mean, however, that there is anything "dangerous" about it. The real danger is your unemployment, not the words we're writing.

Furthermore, there is a big difference between journalism and blogging. I have yet to break a sports story. I don't have any sources. I don't interview people and I don't have deadlines. All I do is give my take on what I see with my own two eyes, which is the same thing Smith does everyday on the radio. It would be dangerous if I was trying to break a story, but what idiot is going to read something I write on ArmChairGm.com and think it is breaking news? I don't need to have a beat writer's experience to have an opinion on sports and I certainly don't need a journalism degree to type a sentence expressing it.

Talk to us about ethics and sources when crap like the Les Miles story happens. What if ESPN and Herbstreet cost Michigan the coach they wanted? Had they not reported it, then it may have happened. All ESPN does is base their "professional" and "ethically sound" reports on rumor and innuendo. Then one of the worst of the bunch has the balls to go after bloggers for doing what he does better than he does it! Cowardice, that what that is. I was neutral on Smith before reading this but not anymore. He has reason to be scarred for his job.

Stephen A Smith is just another one of those talking heads from the Eastern Seaboard PRogramming Network whose ego is over inflated and feels that the louder you talk, the more likely people are the repsect you and actually believe what you have to say. I have noticed that this has been occuring more and more on ESPN. They are slowly replacing all the qualified and respected people with former athletes who feel that by talking louder and belittling people it makes their opinion even more valid. The sad part is when qualified and inteligent journalists(Clayton) are being forced into generic formats where confrontation and yelling is encouraged. All it does is bring the god journalists down. Thank God Peter Gammons hasnt fallen for such programed tripe.

I 'd say that I agree with 5% of what Smith says here (or what he means, maybe) but the rest of it is crap.

There's a web-site called BostonDirtDogs.com, it's one of the most popular Red Sox blogs. However, it acts like a news agency. It breaks stories and reports rumors as news. One day, someone e-mailed a falsified story about Nomar refusing his Red Sox World Series ring at spring training. BDD reported it as news, then the e-mailer reported that he concocted the entire story.

Normal news agencies have reputations and (most of the time) report the news responsibly, checking information and using reliable sources. When it comes to some guy writing on blogspot (like me, http://bloodsox.blogspot.com), I have no official news agency checking me or ensuring I'm accurate. I think that a lot of bloggers try to become reporters and not columnists. Blogs are ideal for opinions based on widely available facts. There's lots of stories I've heard 2nd hand, and even experienced first hand about athletes, teams, players, and executives of Boston area sports. But most of it is stuff I can't confirm, so I keep it to myself.

That being said, the "traditional" news agencies have ventured down the path of irresponsible journalism, and unprecedented sensationalism. The era of the revered newsman delivering stories on the nightly news are over. This is the age of the pundit, the controversial host, and televised screaming contests. Look at ESPN News, or SportsCenter. A great deal of the programming is opinions, not news. It's basically a televised blog.

I agree, Rawb. Bloggers are opinionists, not insiders with a break on the news.

I've spent parts of my blogging career on both sides of the fence... Sports Journalism is a sham and people are starting to realize it. The "guys on the inside" have been hogging the angle for so long they forgot they had an angle.

As with anything in life, people want something they can't do for themselves.

SORRY, STEPHEN A... AS MUCH AS A FRESH ANGLE THAT YOU SUPPLY, there's enough "regular" people in the world that can sit down with an athlete and "keep it real" and hold conversations with them without slobbering over their fame. Kicking it with "the boys" is NOT what makes you special. Having the opportunity to begin with is...

Stephen Aloysius needs to learn to embrace the cultures that comprise the Sports Journalism environment, not FEAR them.

FEAR is a sign of insecurity. He knows there are better people (such as the contributors r Armchair) doing what he tries to do...

Great post!I've never liked this type of abrasive TV "journalism". IN ANY FORMAT! Opionion or rumor sold as fact is ALWAYS dangerous. (And yes, there is a website where you can post rumors you've heard...Google "downfall of western civilization"), which does create a need for viligilance. These people (Screamin' A. and the like.)are there because of the sheep that make it possible to put them there. There should ALWAYS be a platform for the masses to speak/write. The internet becomes the new Town Hall for what ever the topic is, a place for people to "peaceably assemble". Sports, politics, dare I say it... Hollywood, whatever your angle is. Then so be it and more power to it. But to propose to determine who is qualified to have that platform to aire grievences(or opinions)is more unamerican than many, many other things I can think of. It seems I remember the Drudge Report and Smoking Gun being lambasted as not-real jounalism. (I am neither espouseing nor bashing but both have broken stories BEFORE the main stream.)Try being a Russian jounalist shooting off an unflattering column about Putin. Be thankful we have what we have, Stephen. End of Rant.

I've got a few issues:

1) Stephen A does have one point...but i think it fixes itself...How many of you depend on blogs for world news...did you read a blog to learn about the jena 6 or Darfur or the kid that got burned by Iraqis, etc etc etc....no you facking got it a CNN...most people take a lot of info on blogs with a grain of salt because they aren't trained journalists - but at the same time...its nice to have an alternate viewpoint

2) So what qualifies Stephen A to talk about anything business related...I (practically) have a finance degree...should i be annoyed when he discusses anything remotely related to business or finance because I'm more of an expert than him?

3) Its no really sabotage at all. Has anyone here ever claimed to be a legitimate journalist or reporter? Has anyone lied about their credentials? Most people will tell you exactly who they are...or at least not lock their wikipedia pages ; - )
